Pioneer attorney David J. Leahy dies in Las Vegas New Mexico
David J. Leahy, 68, longtime New Mexico jurist and attorney, died in Las Vegas after a four day illness. A La Salle Illinois native, he came to New Mexico in 1891 to head Springer School and later led Colfax county schools. He served as Fourth Judicial district judge before practicing law here and was a Spanish American War veteran with the Rough Riders, wounded at San Juan Hill.

Santa Fe February 7 The AP reports there will be no further effort to unseat the San Miguel county delegation of three in the New Mexico House. An inquiry found irregularities but not enough to overturn the 3,000 plus majorities. the action will be dropped and the same rule may apply to the single San Miguel Guadalupe district representative.

Rip Van Winkle Visits Old Friends in Eastern New Mexico
J. S. Van Winkle known as Rip Van Winkle was in the city yesterday visiting friends before heading home to Globe Arizona. He lived here for years, leaving about twenty seven years ago after twenty years of service to Captain J. C. Lea founder of Roswell and to C. D. Bonney on a ranch near the Hondo river. Old timers still recall Rip Van Winkle among them.

Mrs Maples Dies In Roswell After Ill Health
Mrs Laura Ida Maples wife of W C Maples died today just after noon at Roswell where she and her husband had lived for 24 years. Born April 12 1881 in Bell County Texas she had been in ill health seven months. Survived by husband her mother Mrs Bette Parker four daughters two sisters and three brothers. Funeral arrangements to be announced by Talmage Mortuary with services expected Saturday afternoon.

Changes in Work Relief Bill Expand Labor Wages Rule
Senate appropriations panel advanced the $4.88 billion work relief bill with an amendment requiring labor on all public projects to be paid no less than prevailing private wages in the locality. The vote was 12 to 8, opposing administration plans to pay below private rates. The panel also restored authority for eminent domain purchases to support the vast tree shelter belt program. A later vote, 13 to 7, required contracts for construction with 10 percent or more skilled labor to go to the lowest qualified bidder. Speaker Burns opposed any dole substitution for the work plan.

Pioneer Ranger Captain Daniel W. Roberts Dies in Austin
Captain Daniel W. Roberts 94, uncle of Mrs. James F. Hinkle, died yesterday at his home in Austin Texas. A Lincoln County pioneer and former sheriff, he led Company D Frontier Battalion during early Texas Indian wars. He authored Rangers and Sovereignty and spent his later years in Austin. Burial is scheduled at the Texas State Cemetery tomorrow at two o'clock.

Albuquerque reports January snowfall in the New Mexico section of the upper Rio Grande watershed was near normal. Mild temps caused melting but substantial snow remains at higher elevations. two months of heavy snow are needed to sustain normal flow, and overall seasonal snow remains below normal. In Pecos, snowfall is very light and little has fallen in the Canadian watershed.

Woman Arrested For Drunk Driving
Mrs. Maggie Norman aged 31 was arrested this morning and jailed for allegedly driving a truck while intoxicated. She purportedly struck Bob Smith of Roswell in the alley behind Mabie Lowrey Hardware Store and damaged parked cars. Smith sustained bruises but no serious injuries. Norman was en route from Amarillo to El Paso.

Civil Engineer Don Lewis Dies in Gallup Crash
Don Lewis, 28, civil engineer from St. Johns Arizona, died in Gallup New Mexico from injuries after an auto accident near St. Joseph Arizona on Sunday. His companion Archie Garundo, former Gallup boxer, was killed in the same crash. Doctors sought blood donations but he died before transfusions could be arranged.
