Senate to decide on Davis for Transportation Authority

The state Senate is set to hold confirmation hearings today for Lloyd Davis of Roswell appointed by Gov. Toney Anaya to the Transportation Authority. Davis, New Mexico Division Manager for Southwestern Public Service, will face a Senate committee in the morning and then the full Senate before confirmation. The Authority was created by 1985 Legislature action.

65-Year-Old Arkansan Earns GED After 70-Year Gap

Vesta Jenkins, 65, earned a GED in October, becoming possibly the oldest Arkansan to receive the diploma after dropping out at 15 to help on the farm. She pursued the test for personal satisfaction, not job prospects, while Thelma Cook notes she may be Arkansas’s oldest GED recipient. Jenkins says she did not study for the test.

Gifted Child Program Retained by Senators

The New Mexico Senate committee approved Senate Bill 146 to keep the gifted student program largely as is, amid debate over teacher tenure and arbitration. The measure estimates about 40 million dollars for a $2,500 teacher pay raise and 48 million over five years for other reforms, with potential hires to reach required pupil teacher ratios.

Panel approves 1.298 billion budget bill in revised estimate

The Appropriations and Finance Committee approved House Bill 2 the General Appropriations Act aligning with revised 1686 87 general fund income. The bill authorizes 4 298 137 200 in recurring spending next fiscal year reduced by about 55 million from earlier session levels. The panel met in private to finalize the act, which now heads to the House for final passage expected Wednesday then to the Senate with a Feb 1 deadline.
