Fire at the 22 story Joelma building in Sao Paulo, Brazil, killed at least 179 people including two American bankers. A man leaped from the top and others scrambled to escape the flames as the downtown bank fire burned Friday, with unofficial figures suggesting higher death tolls.
Authorities probe both state and city lines into the blaze that killed at least 179 people, including William Frantz Williams of Denver and Lindus Cody Marsh of New York. The vote count rose as morgue officials registered the dead.
Del Norte won the sweepstakes trophy at the Fifth Annual New Mexico State Drill Team Clinic Competition held Saturday at Goddard High School.
The New Mexico House Appropriations Committee backed adding 26.2 million to next year's state support for public schools, on a Friday night closed session. The current appropriation is 175.6 million, with most of the increase earmarked for basic education.
Mrs. Miquela Mendoza a 49 year old deputy clerk and former deputy assessor announced her candidacy for county assessor ahead of the June Democratic primary. She highlighted her 9 years as deputy assessor including 5 years as chief deputy and current work as deputy county clerk.
Energy Chief William E. Simon and three Cabinet members called the independent truckers shutdown a serious threat to economic well being. They appealed by telegram to the nation’s 50 governors for assistance to restore order and commerce. Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko will meet President Nixon Monday, with a tentative Nixon visit to the Soviet Union around June.
Homer F. Glover of Roswell received a unanimous salute from 45 officers of the National Independent Meat Packers Association at Marco Island Florida. The resolution praises his leadership of Glover's Inc and his lifetime service to the industry.
Ten drill teams competed at Goddard High School for the Fifth Annual NM State Drill Tear Class. Tularosa won Showmanship and the AAAA sweepstakes went to Sandia and Rio Grande with Del Norte taking the overall Sweepsakes award. The Apache Belles judged the event for the first time, with 10 Belles performing and no scholarships awarded to participants.
