Augusto Sandino pledged peace after U S Marines exited Nicaragua with President Sacasa. He promised to disarm his forces as he returned to his mountain HQ. Officials said the accord opened a new era though terms were not made public.
Chaves county taxpayers form a committee to unite taxpayers associations across the state to press the legislature for passage of the state sales tax and federation proposals. A planned Santa Fe meeting seeks county representation to drum up support while officials discuss cutting county expenses and voluntary salary reductions.
Miller and John T. Hall of Amarillo report that Reconstruction Finance Corporation loans to feeders enabled large scale feeding recently. Miller shipped two carloads of steers and two double‑deck cars of lambs from Roswell to Iowa feeders yesterday and plans to head to western New Mexico tomorrow.
P. E. Anderson extension dairy man from state college will speak to Roswell dairymen at the chamber of commerce at 7 30 next Tuesday evening on mineral feed for dairying and other dairy questions. Anyone interested is invited. On Wednesday Mr Anderson with J R Thomas county agent will inspect the dairies in the Roswell vicinity.
The Roswell welfare office, previously on the court house's second floor, has been relocated to the basement in the room once used by the U. S. Employment office. Miss Lilian Franzen leads the office and administers federal direct relief funds. applications for work are taken there by men from needy families. Each case is investigated and only deserving men receive work orders paid at 12 1/2 cents per hour with grocery credits funded by federal relief money.
Santa Fe N M Feb 3 AP annexation of contiguous territory by cities with 3000+ population is proposed in a house bill by Rep Roy J Carroll. Annexation occurs without election after a hearing. residents in the territory may protest. Other measures include a license tax on all business and professions and exemptions for self produced produce. A fifth bill targets fraudulent itinerant vendor sales and a $200 privilege license is proposed.
In Hobbs field two new producers were completed this week the Turner 26 of Stanolind Oil and Gas and the Hardin 2 of Gypsy Oil. Gas production and oil flow figures are given from proration gauges with details on locations and depths. A Bowers 3 PB Humble Oil and Refining Co well showed 12 150 barrels oil and 9 500 000 feet gas, with a prior week test showing 590 fewer oil barrels. Continental Oil Company Sheles B shows an oil surge at 3 324 feet suggesting a new pay level brewing. drilling will continue toward major pay. A new Amerada Petroleum Corporation location No 3 Hardin SW 18-18-38 was staked.
Ed Williams Will C Lawrence Dan H Wilmot and Ross L Malone left this morning in Mr Lawrence s car for a vacation trip to Corpus Christi Texas. They expect to be gone eight or ten days.
Three Amarillo men George Newsome Bob Walker and Henry Chamberland confessed involvement in an attempted January 17 burglary of the First State Bank in Dumas Texas. They are held on a federal auto theft charge plus ongoing Texas investigations.
The executive committee of the Chaves County Farm Bureau will meet tomorrow afternoon at the home of John Tweedy to plan and arrange the program for the bureau annual meeting, likely to be held at month's end.
Hagerman residents have arranged the Farmers' Gin Co office for canning meat. County agent J R Thomas will visit Hagerman on Monday Tuesday and Thursday next week to assist. Six beeves are already ready to be canned.
Four carloads of sheep were shipped to the Kansas City market today from the Cauhape ranch near Hope. They were shipped out of Artesia.
Bert Allen Granet, 23, who said he was a Hollywood writer, was arrested in Albuquerque after Deming authorities sought to question him about three crashes within an hour in the Deming area yesterday. A car believed driven by Granet struck R. S. Pond, then A. C. Hall’s car, before the same vehicle was found overturned near Deming.
Roswell rifle enthusiasts begin .30 calibre military rifle shooting with first practice Sunday afternoon at the range three miles west of town. Targets at 600 and 200 yards with one o clock setup. Eimer hopes to field a championship team and build a thousand yard fire point. The club welcomes all shooters and offers additional .22 calibre practices twice weekly at Fixit Shop, 120 East Third Street.
Santa Fe announced that 28 counties had received allotments but only 2922 of the first federal loan for indigent relief had been used by Jan 15. Three counties Catron Santa Fe and Union had requests for aid. Taos received 18.25 and De Baca 19.12 dollars.
President elect Roosevelt fixed policies and identified his team tonight as he heads for a short vacation before taking office. He aims to force an international peace move, seek relief and tariff currency reforms from European debtors, and possibly call an extra congressional session for farm relief budget balancing and government reorganization. A Tennessee watershed project could spearhead a broad revival including forestry, reclamation, hydro power, and agriculture.
Funeral services for W. M. Wooten, delayed to await Texas relatives, are planned for tomorrow afternoon at the Bynum Ballard chapel. Rev. Julian Atwood will lead with the First Baptist Church choir providing music. Burial will follow at South Park. Pallbearers include E. E. Young, George Smith, W. P. Turner, W. C. Parks, Hubert Martin, and F. O. Calvert. Wooten, who had lived in Roswell seven years, died suddenly in Carrizozo on Wednesday evening.
E W Mitchell Roswell agent for the Godaire Estate ordered immediate alterations to Purdy Furniture Store and Henrys Barber Shop. C R Carr drew the contract with F I Sullins as contractor after bid review. Work to begin at once and take a little over a month.
The January report by Harold Crosby county treasurer shows 1932 taxes totaling 15 246 85 and overall taxes collected 19 755 97. Receipts for the month reached 24 226 78 with disbursements at 32 717 11. The January 31 balance stood at 92 731 46 and the salary fund ended at 1 121 67 with the monthly payroll about 3 206. Prospects for paying salaries to county officials for several months.
A letter from C M Bassett president of the State National Bank El Paso confirms farm production loans for Pecos and Rio Grande valleys will be handled via an El Paso branch. The Welfare Board of north Eddy county serving Artesia reports aiding about 960 people. Fred Brainard, chairman of the board from Artesia, cited the figure.
