Sen Timothy Z Jennings takes over the Education Committee with veteran chair authority as New Mexico lawmakers begin the session. Nearly 400 bills have been filed by week two and Roswell voters face a school bond issue election referenced on the agenda.
Roswell Independent School District voters decide two Board seats from eight candidates and a 6.1 million dollar bond for facility upgrades. The vote runs 7 p.m. at 13 polling places with absentee deadline past.
President Reagan’s Education Secretary Bell announced scrapping Carter era bilingual education guidelines to curb costs and federal enforcement. He pledged flexibility while defending civil rights and pledging to protect non English speaking students as districts pursue effective methods.
State Rep Barnard, D-Curry, proposes three bills to end the Construction Industries Division and move inspections to the Environmental Inspection Division or a Department of Commerce linked framework. He argues the current system creates conflicts with the city of Roswell and contractors over who inspects and investigates, while noting the division profits from licenses and fees.
A 15 year old black youth Anthony Gates reported missing in Fulton County was located safe mid morning at Roosevelt High School. Police confirmed he was found unharmed after being reported missing by his mother on Sunday.
President Reagan and South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan met in the Oval Office for about 80 minutes with Vice President Bush. They planned talks on security commitments, Korean military modernization, and stronger trade ties. Gifts were exchanged and a luncheon held.
