A record 31 candidates filed by 5 p.m. for mayor municipal judge and five City Council seats for the March 7 election. Five vie for mayor and judge each. 21 seek council seats across five wards. DeWayne Beagles withdrew, leaving a split among three tickets led by L C Stiles CT IT and CS.
Former New Mexico Governor David F. Cargo, now in Oregon, headlines a Republican roast in Santa Fe and comments on Apodaca and campaign finance. In Roswell, mayoral candidates including Stiles and Bell push openness, while Ferguson faces an arson and larceny case with a trial set for April.
Nineteen Roswell Girl Scouts from Troop 34 served as pages in the New Mexico House of Representatives under Rep. Paul J. Kelly Jr. Most girls missed a school day but gained education through the trip. The group, led by Mrs. Katie Horton and Mrs. Sandy Allman with volunteer Geraldine Albert, toured Santa Fe Saturday and Sunday and the roundhouse Monday.
The Labor Department sues Teamsters President Frank E. Fitzsimmons and 16 former trustees of the Central States Pension Fund seeking recovery of millions from alleged imprudent loans to casinos, race tracks, and real estate ventures. The suit, filed in Chicago under the 1974 pension reform law, targets eight union officials and eight trucking executives with potential personal liability. Alvin Baron and Daniel Shannon are also named defendants amid related kickback indictments.
Kevin Utterback 27 of 2301 Cornell Drive has filed to represent Ward IV on the Roswell City Council. He was raised in Artesia and has lived in Roswell since 1959. He and his wife Elizabeth have one daughter. Utterback aims to attract industry to create jobs for youth and plans more civic involvement while opposing bond issues.
