Washington reports a preview of the Roosevelt cabinet as party insiders note most posts have been offered and several settled. State Senator Cordell Hull of Tennessee is named as a possibility, with Owen D Young of New York another option.
The Associated Press reports on Senate SB85 to allow a 60 day claim period for gasoline tax refund exemptions, SB86 to reduce bonds for state and county treasurers, SB87 to set presidential elector meeting times, SB88 to require tax commission to value omitted property, plus resolutions SIRS and SJRS expressing sympathy for Charles Springer. Bills SB48 passed granting preference to New Mexico materials in public works, with 22 ayes and 1 no.
In Santa Fe the state senate considered SJR2 to repeal the bone dry constitutional amendment. House members planned morning sessions to attend anticipated debates, with experts predicting a four vote antis victory if two staunch prohibitionists shift. Senator Sedillo anticipated strong arguments from prohibition supporters.
Chicago February 1 AP Harry Joseph president of Chicago West Park System said the system likely faces a deficit around 10 million dollars after an audit of conditions under a former administration. A citizens committee said the system is insolvent and urged official action.
Fifteen thousand Chinese Communists sweep from Shensi into Szechuan looting towns and driving out established authorities. Word from Chungking says foreign missionaries in northwestern Szechuan are fleeing into that area.
General Motors in New York reports that the quarterly directorate meeting, once slated for dividend action on the first Wednesday, will be held next Monday instead. The change affects the schedule for the board as it reviews financial matters and corporate actions for the upcoming quarter.
The Chaves County Taxpayers Association and allied groups will convene at 3 36 p m at the Chamber of Commerce to seek reductions in county expenditures and discuss state tax proposals. Plans may include a conference with county officials on the next fiscal year's budget beginning July first, called by W C Holland.
The Interstate Commerce Commission reaffirmed two year old findings fixing maximum livestock handling rates in the western section. A reopened inquiry followed a Supreme Court grain rate ruling and a January 25, 1932, rate structure order allowing lower stocker and feeder cattle rates, subject to 30 days notice, with final rates to take effect by April 10.
Washington February 1 AP Senator Bronson Cutting of New Mexico says the Independents intend to form an understanding and establish definite principles to guide their fights. Cutting one of three named to a committee drafting a program for roughly 15 senators known as Progressives in a first term interview.
San Francisco reports a sunny respite after two weeks of winter storms. The Pacific northwest endures scattered snowfalls with a major slide on Snoqualmie Pass and heavy snow in Spokane County. About 2000 motorists were rescued as Lake Arrowhead roads opened, while Ep som Valley and Hartland remain snowbound but supplied. Grass Valley installs emergency pumping as water mains run dry.
Bernalillo County Independent Club members voiced opposition to altering how conservancy district directors are chosen in a house resolution. The group also endorsed Sen. Juan A. Sedillo of Santa Fe for backing the anti fratern ity bill, prohibition stance, and participation in the senze repeal measure.
In Santa Fe on February 1, the House considered memorials to Congress on labor legislation and sales taxes. Rep. Thurmond warned against hasty action as debate intensified over measures including an eight hour bill while opponents pressed for budget economy and restraint on new levies.
Lordsburg New Mexico February 1 AP Q K Harlow and W C Magness Brownwood Texas escaped serious injury but their truck hauling lettuce oranges and cauliflower from Phoenix to Texas was demolished when hit by a freight engine at a grade crossing. The cab crossed first and the train struck the truck. both men were only bruised and the produce was ground to pulp.
Alamogordo leader Ferris Shelton said Hoover designated a portion of White Sands as a national monument but only about one third of the area is included. He argued there are nearly 200 square miles remaining for manufacturing uses and that geologists estimate 33,000,000 tons per square mile of potential material.

Democratic leaders clash over uniting House Democrats against a tariff proposal tied to gold standard currencies. Rainey announced a caucus to decide, then said the plan was temporarily abandoned pending Hill bill hearings.
A liquor raid by eight officers seized a 100 gallon still and four gallons of liquor seven miles northwest of Roswell near Pine Lodge road. Four suspects, Cecil Hanks Herbert Carson Sid Banks and Bob Lamar with Mrs Bessie Wiley were arrested at a Roswell house. The operation was run from the old Collins place and the raid involved federal, county and city officers. The four men named Marlow Oklahoma residents were taken without resistance and the case now proceeds to investigation.

Federal forest officials asked I. Beatty, county agricultural agent, to help exterminate a weed that has killed 28 head of livestock in Lincoln National Forest over the past year. A spray to kill the weed will be used by Beatty to rid the range country of it. The plant appears to grow only in limited areas.
London reports floated a possible US backed moratorium on war debt payments to Britain until a new settlement is reached. The June 15 due date looms as Anglo American talks with President elect Roosevelt proceed, with Sir Ronald Lindsay to brief ministers after meeting Roosevelt.
Albuquerque authorities probe the 1924 grave of Lolo Ortiz after a body vanishes from a cemetery near Martineztown. An undertaker and locals speculate the missing remains were taken for a secret initiation or by a so called witch doctor. Police lack a definite clue and search relatives prove unsuccessful.
The New Mexico house approved a four cent excise tax per gallon on lubricating oil to fund free textbooks, with a 45 to 1 vote. The session adjourned after a morning marking session and reconvened in the afternoon. A memorial seeking federal railroad legislation was approved 39 to 7 in a straight party vote. In Santa Fe the repeal issue loomed as a close Senate vote, with Democratic progressives split and a special election set for September.
L. L. Johnson recently elected justice of the peace and police judge will assume office on Monday February 6. The Record had reported an earlier date due to misinformed information. state law specifies the first Monday in February as the start of the term.
In Grand Canyon Arizona on February 1 AP reported that Havasupai Indians and officials sought aid as food supplies were cut off by heavy snow. Superintendent M R Tillotson began hauling in heavy snow removal equipment along 38 miles of poor roads to Hilltop and a 14 mile trail from Havasu Canyon to Grand Canyon Village food source.
The January 1933 Roswell water department report shows 42,124,000 gallons pumped, up 8 percent from January 1932, with sales $2,636.21 amid lower rates. average daily consumption 1,358,339 gallons and per capita 123 gallons, one new service and 223 meters repaired. The police report records $304 in fines and 11 city cases, including one drunken driving incident and two cases of drunk and disorderly conduct.
Carl Bird spoke at the Roswell Advertising Club noting that standout ads require something different to be seen. He stressed good ad placement, novelty as an attention getter, and using short paragraphs with simple words to paint clear images, illustrated by clipped newspaper ads.
