President Johnson met with Secretary of State Dean Rusk at the Texas ranch to review the budget and Cambodia. No White House comment emerged on Southeast Asia or Prince Nordom Sihanouk talks. In Saigon, four U S Army helicopters were shot down in the Mekong Delta amid ongoing combat after the New Year cease fire. The allies said operations continue until 6 p m Sunday. Roswell Daily Record will not publish Monday due to New Year holiday.
Station KSWS TV of Roswell is to be sold to Bryant Radio and Television Co of Lubbock Texas from the John A Barnett estate. Purchase price is not announced and FCC filing will follow. KSWS radio remains separate and will continue operating. KSWS TV had the Caprock tower once the world tallest structure before collapse in an ice storm.
Roswell bank presidents and chamber officials forecast 1968 growth with two large new installations 250 to 300 workers each and four to five smaller ones. Employment could rise 800 to 1,000 as major local industries expand. Retail sales improve with year total near 90 million. Hay and livestock prices stay strong, cotton prospects depend on mills and acreage policy.
Air Force Maj. Duane W. Rice of Roswell received the Silver Star for gallantry during a March ground support mission in Vietnam. Flying F100s with Maj. Frank Howard, Rice made eight passes at low altitude for air support over the Bon Song Valley, earning him a second Distinguished Flying Cross and other honors.
Seismographs in the Denver region registered two tremors described as quakes over the past days. Officials later identified the events as explosions using 2800 and 1800 pounds of TNT, clarifying the supposed quakes.
