Road work at Ottawa and Shoshoni roads starts January
Chaves County Road Department replaces a structure at the Ottawa Road and Shoshoni Road intersection from January 9 to February 3. Ottawa Road will close to thru traffic from SR 2 to Shoshoni Road with detours around the work area. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and follow detour signage while avoiding work zones when possible. Inmate found hanging in Clovis cell amid abuse case
Roosevelt County officials say 22 year old Darrell Lewis of Clovis was found unresponsive hanging by a cloth from his bunk in his cell. He died after being taken to the hospital the next day. Lewis had appeared in court earlier Monday for arraignment on a felony child abuse charge and a misdemeanor obstruction charge. The sheriff's office investigates.

Death row appeal reinstated in New Mexico
The New Mexico Supreme Court revived a habeas corpus petition by Timo thy Allen of Bloomfield convicted of murder kidnapping and attempted rape of a 17 year old near Flora Vista in 1994. The court ruled a district court erred by dismissing the challenge as a sanction for refusing deposition questions. Robert Fry of Farmington is also on death row.
