Privacy fears delay airport body scanners worldwide
High tech security scanners that could have prevented the Christmas Day attack have been installed at only a small number of airports due to privacy concerns. The devices reveal body contours and are contested by privacy advocates, slowing widespread adoption while TSA expands millimeter wave and backscatter options at select U.S. airports and tests continue in Europe.

Obama signals hearings on homeland security in January
President Obama said the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee would hold hearings in January. The thwarted attack was claimed by al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as retaliation for a U S operation in Yemen, where two airstrikes targeted operatives this month. Abdulmutallab traveled from August to December to Yemen to study in Sana, using an Arabic school visa. Officials fear Yemen’s instability could let al Qaida establish a base to plan attacks, while reviews of watchlists and airport screening proceed.
