AP reports President Reagan called the Middle East moment a time of extreme tension as he condemned terrorist attacks in Rome and Vienna and tensions in Israel and surrounding Arab governments.
Police said Palestinian extremists carried out the Rome and Vienna airport attacks blamed on retaliation for Israel’s Tunisia raid. Fifteen died in Rome and three at Vienna with many injuries. Autopsies confirm gunfire and device blasts, with the attackers identified as Palestinians. some carried Moroccan passports.
Joe Delgado of the Sierra Volunteer Fire Department led a response to a Saturday barn blaze on Abertie Browning's property 52 miles northeast of Roswell. The barn valued at 5000 dollars burned, scrap lumber and electrical wire destroyed, and about 30 acres of grass burned. Four county volunteer departments with 20 firefighters and 11 firetrucks responded. Officials traced the start to a trash can that spread to nearby material.
New Mexico's seat belt rule takes effect Wednesday with police ready to warn for a few days then issue citations. The law requires drivers and front seat passengers to wear belts or face fines up to 50 dollars. pickup trucks are exempt. Officials project annual saves of over 100 lives and thousands of injuries.

The Chaves County Grievance Panel heard its first case and will issue a recommendation January 6 on whether Sheriff Glen Dennis improperly caused former jail matron Joyce Booker to leave her job. Booker left August 21, hours before a 90 day relocation grace period ended August 22. Dennis had warned that failure to move would lead to dismissal. The county lacks a written residency rule though Dennis had set one for his department after Booker's move. Booker was hired in September and moved north of Artesia in March with her family.
