A Roswell child received a new tricycle from policemen and was soon bereft when it vanished two hours later. Neighbors reported seeing him crying by the curb as the missing toy sparked concern and community chatter.
The long awaited heavyweight title bout between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali is set for Madison Square Garden with closed circuit TV on March 8. Each fighter reportedly guaranteed a $2.5 million purse for a show expected to gross near $10 million. The event will mark a historic return to the arena.
Gov. David F. Cargo presses federal voting age ruling with Atty. Gen. James Maloney opinion allowing 16-year-olds to register after January 1. Maloney cites the Supreme Court decision expanding the vote to 18 and over in federal elections.
In Atlanta a My Lai veteran Spec 4 Robert T Souvas is among 18 charged with murder over the shotgun slaying of Barney McSherry 21 in a hippie district rooming house. Police seized petrol bombs dynamite guns money and drugs. complicating the case are linked gang tensions and a pretrial hearing set for January 12.
ENMU Roswell professor Amarante Fresquez and local farmer LeRoy Lang filed today for the Roswell Independent School District election. They join four others for two six year terms on Feb 2 1971 with a 5 p.m. filing deadline Thursday.
Sen. Gordon Allott says the General Accounting Office found evidence of questionable and possibly illegal activities by William J. Hartigan a Kennedy family friend and aide in the transfer of mail from rail to air carriers. He urges DOJ action and asks agencies to study restoring mail to passenger trains where feasible. Hartigan served as White House aide in 1961 and later assistant postmaster general for transportation.
Lynette Fromme Ruth Ann Morehouse and others faced arraignment in Los Angeles on conspiracy to provide an LSD hamburger to a witness in the Tate LaBianca murder trial. Steve Grogan and Catherine Share were also charged in the same case.
Virgil D. Brodie of Lovington was killed when his truck left U.S. 70 and burned after hitting a drainage ditch. The 11,000 gallon butane gas rig headed to Ruidoso was involved. Fire departments extinguished the blaze and traffic was rerouted for hours.
Rep. F Edward Hebert pledges to keep the House Armed Services Committee on a hard line set by the late chairman L Mendel Rivers He also says the draft should not end military spending must rise with a modern Navy as top priority and attacks critics as ignorant and emotional.
Hebert told newsmen that adopting Nixon’s plan to hand the war to South Vietnam is the only path now, claiming his and Rivers’ advice could have ended the war in U.S. victory five years ago if followed. He cited bombing North Vietnam and Haiphong harbor as first targets. He questioned the military industrial complex in North Vietnam as sacrosanct. He said Nixon inherited a “sorry and unholy mess” and is pursuing the course.
Hebert labeled the Rivers policy as a no win approach while opposing an overseas police role. He warned the draft would continue beyond June and doubted Nixon’s volunteer Army plan. He urged reassessment of U S commitments abroad as the House committee prepares to extend conscription.
Appeals Court Judge LaFel Oman confirms 3 acre feet per year for irrigation rights, with an extra 2 acre inches per acre foot for carriage loss for 1967 onward. Priority dates pinned to well drilling or 1931 application dates. Hagerman Irrigation Co details extend to Roswell Basin wells 1905 1912.

Reese Jr. Reese's resignation letter dated Nov. 10 and the effective time midnight Dec. 31 raise doubts. King says he had no say if resignation was effective. Cargo seeks a new resignation letter if needed. A swearing-in for Snead was set for 10 a.m. tomorrow in the District Courtroom.
