The University of New Mexico seeks to preserve the 160 acre D H Lawrence Ranch north of Taos. An advisory board will include D H Lawrence Ranch Alliance and Friends of D H Lawrence. The property, left to UNM by Frieda Lawrence, has faced decline with upgrades needed to water and electrical systems and baths. Notable visitors over the years include Carl Jung Willa Cather and Georgia O Keeffe.
As he nears retirement after 42 years in law enforcement James R Coon will leave the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office this Wednesday. His career spans SCUBA diving SWAT hostage negotiation Honor Guard and instructor roles with the New Mexico State Police. He was among two officers still active who responded to the 1980 prison riot.
Former Eddy County Sheriff Kent Waller becomes Carlsbad police chief on January 1 at the New Mexico State Penitentiary in Santa Fe. Coon recalls facing horrific scenes and adjusts to the job despite heavy exposure and damage.
