Energy Chief Orders 6-Degree Home Heating Cut in Oil

Energy Secretary William E. Simon issued a night directive mandating a six degree thermostat reduction in oil heated homes and a ten degree cut in other oil heated buildings with Jan. 15 as the implementation date. Violations carry up to 5,000 dollar fines for suppliers while individuals face no direct penalty beyond potential oil depletion. The plan also assigns top priority for gasoline allocations to essential services and bulk buyers and introduces a standby rationing system and new rules for middle distillates and aviation fuel.

British strike ends as engineers end work slowdown

Electric power engineers halted a two month slowdown in Britain while coal miners met officials with no breakthrough. About 400,000 workers laid off in England and Wales and forecasts show nearly a million could lose jobs next week due to the energy crisis. Snowstorm blankets Rockies with heavy snow and drifting

A major snowstorm swept the Rockies from Montana to Utah with gusty winds creating hazardous travel. Butte recorded 6 inches of snow while Yakima saw 3 inches, boosting ground cover to 11 inches. Travelers advisories and road closures appeared in northern and central Rockies amid cold, fog, and light snow around Lake Superior.

Coast Guard reports two men lost at sea

The Coast Guard says First Mate George K. Gann and ship skipper C. W. Pemberton washed overboard from the Chevron Mississippi amid heavy seas and are presumed dead. Gann is 38, from Belvedere California. Pemberton is 50, from Seattle.

Tanker activity slows under Arab oil embargo impact

The Arab oil embargo has slowed tanker traffic in the United States with cargoes delayed and fuel costs rising. A AP survey of six major ports finds imports down from pre embargo levels as shipments come from the Caribbean West Africa Indonesia and South America. Brokers say a six month continuation could cripple the industry though spot rates have fallen about 75 percent from the Persian Gulf to Europe.

President Nixon announces the $1.5 billion manpower bill signing in San Clemente.
