UNDELIVERED NEW YORK AP reports the city dead letter department handles about 2,500 Santa Claus letters this year. Past years saw 3,000 to 4,000 letters from New York State and abroad. Requests range from toy wishes to promises of good behavior, including a girl pleading for Santa to visit next year.
Veronica Pomponi, a dry cleaning clerk in Philadelphia, found a growing pile of cash in a customer's pants. The money totaled at least four thousand dollars, with bills of 100 50 and 10 denominations. She chased the thief to a nearby supermarket but the woman said nothing and walked away.

President Johnson said King Olav V will visit Washington April 24 25 with further U S stops to follow. The White House noted the king will also tour other cities after the Washington visit.
Michigan Governor George Romney, during a world tour in Indonesia, said he is pleased Eisenhower clarified a misattributed statement. Eisenhower told CBS he did not back any candidate and believed Romney has taken strong, intelligent positions on vital domestic issues. The New York Times had claimed Eisenhower criticized Romney.
Bert Ballard resigns as chairman and member of the New Mexico State Board of Probation and Parole after advising Gov. David Cargo that medical advice requires curtailing outside activities. Ballard, a Democrat and former Roswell mayor, has served since 1963 with a term ending in 1969.
Hijackers fled with 301000 from an armored truck after driving the vehicle from a crowded lot while guards were in a department store. The truck was abandoned 10 miles away in Beardman with 32000 still inside. police say the loot was transferred to a getaway car.
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley denounces summer demonstrations and vows 5,000 more police as he defends the city against threats tied to the Democratic National Convention. Alderman Leon Despres was wounded in a separate shooting as warnings of protests surface following remarks by Dick Gregory.
In Cordele Georgia authorities exhumed the bodies of two more Gibbs family members after uncovering arsenic in Roger Gibbs. The move follows the murder arrest of Janie Gibbs amid a probe into four family deaths over two years. Her husband Charles Gibbs and two other sons were among those exhumed.
