U S Bateman letters defends saloon interests and argues Democratic party orchestration in Roswell politics. He recounts last city election aims, high license policies, and calls for reform, accountability, and party stewardship including term limits and financial safeguards.
A blaze at Roswell depot last night started in the baggage room among waste. A brakeman added coal oil, spreading flames but not burning the structure. Firemen, aided by chemical extinguishers, contained the fire with two minor injuries to a hose wagon crew. An adjoining street accident caused by a stray box injured Harley Foster. A city vote is called for February 20, 1908, to authorize issuing 35000 in negotiable coupon bonds for a sewer system.
Pittsburg reports what is described as the worst epidemic since 1889 with about a thousand people prostrated by pneumonia typhoid fever and grip. The grip epidemic is said to be especially severe this year compared with 1889.
The Times reports New York has no money crisis after the currency premium drops from one percent to a quarter percent. Weaker demand lowers import costs for gold, making gold importation unprofitable. Russell builds new wagons. Peeler shoes at Makin’s, 10¢ stock sale.
An advertisement notes 25 percent discounts on all goods excluding school books through February 6 as the store relocates to a vacant space beside Price & Co. Ingersoll Book Store. It also lists varying ton prices for wool and hide, a riding or hunting trip offer, real estate transfers, and business notices.
