Lions Toys Reach 639 Children in 216 Families
Roswell and Chaves county residents benefited as the Roswell Lions Club distributed more than 1,800 toys to 639 children in 216 families on Christmas. Toy deliveries extended to Cartwright, Acme, East Grand Plains, L F D communities, Oasis and Tweedy farms, and the Baptist Orphanage at Portales. A helper delivering remaining toys aided a Carlsbad family with eight children, all of whom received gifts. Christmas Holiday Fatalities Top 400, AP Reports
The three day Christmas holiday period yielded a high death toll across the nation. Auto accidents led with over 200 deaths, Illinois mine disaster claimed 54, and California logged 20 auto fatalities. Other causes included brawls, shootings, trains, drownings, fires, and miscellaneous 108 deaths. The Moweaqua Ill. coal mine tragedy accounted for 54 of the total.

Two Killed in Auto Accident Near Carlsbad
Two people died and James A Chambers was seriously injured when a Ford V8 coach returning from a dance struck a highway bridge eight miles past Carlsbad and plunged into an arroyo. Mrs Vorenburg and Mrs Chambers died instantly. Chambers remained unconscious but not critically ill. Funeral plans were announced for Mrs Chambers in Carlsbad and for Vorenburg in Las Vegas. The other occupant, Leland Price, reported the wreck. The accident occurred around 2:30 am after leaving a dance around midnight. The vehicle was traveling at high speed, with the front torn away on impact.
