Holiday layoffs hit auto and timber workers nationwide

The Associated Press reports six million Americans were jobless in November with auto, timber and textile sectors hardest hit. Auto layoffs approach 300,000 by January end, and Pacific Northwest saw 11,400 in Oregon and 10,400 in northern California idled. Textile and housing tied declines worsen unemployment with high rates in construction and specific states like Buffalo and Georgia. Major companies including Xerox and General Electric cut jobs.
