Washington reports increasing combat intensity along the Lingayen gulf coast north of Manila as Japanese landings continue. Allied forces gain some initial successes near Santo Tomas as aerial and naval actions intensify.
AP reports U S mechanized units rush toward the tank fight 125 miles north of Manila while unconfirmed word says 47 Japanese transports may have been sunk off Luzon. heavy air raids devastate Cebu and Lingayen fronts as Churchill joins Roosevelt for War Council.
Winston Churchill and his staff land in the United States to discuss a plan with President Roosevelt aimed at securing victory over the Axis. The war in the Pacific could precede a unified Allied command, with other nations invited to conferences to join the effort.
President Roosevelt hosts a 5 p m Washington meeting with American army and navy officials and British prime minister Churchill and staff. The aim is a unified victory program and a supreme allied command as Axis foes coordinate strategy. Churchill's arrival signals extended talks with secrecy and possible duration.

Forty acres sit along highways 66 and 54 at Newkirk, with the rest 1 to 3 miles south. Land described as mostly level, well watered, drivable by car. Senator Chavez said the idea was referred to the War Department for study.
Moscow dispatches report the Red army pushing Germans back to the Volkhov river southeast of Leningrad and across it in places amid blizzards of 22 degrees below zero. Citing private letters, communications southeast of Leningrad are said to be back online as troops advance west of Tikhvin and east of Leningrad. Tass reports show gains around Maloyaroslavets and 46 villages captured while heavy fighting continues near Sevastopol and in the Caucasus Donets basin.
SAN FRANCISCO Dec 23 The navy said an enemy ship fired on the tanker Larry Doheny six miles off Estero Bay with no contact since. The 4348 ton Richfield Oil tanker reportedly sent lifeboats to shore as gunfire and explosions were heard from Estero to Morro Bay before dawn. Six miles at sea north of the bay the attack began about 3 10 am and lasted until 6 am. The explosion rattled alarms around 4 am and marked the seventh enemy attack in Pacific waters since the war began. Survivors of the Emidio were landed at Eureka yesterday and the raider may have been damaged. Captain A Parrow of the Emidio spoke.
Captain Clark A Farrow arrived at Eureka California with 30 Emidio tanker survivors and said US planes attacked a large Japanese submarine off the California coast after it fired on the tanker. He reported a big blast and smoke after depth charges and that the sub likely submerged. The lifeboats saw the planes, a welcome sight before the submarine vanished.
Washington reports labor and management agreed to forego strikes and lockouts for wartime, settle disputes peacefully, and form a war labor board. President Roosevelt accepts the plan, with a board to be established. Also noted is a Hagerman murder hearing involving Orbit Ham and others, continuing Saturday. Sam Armstrong died from injuries. witnesses describe events at the Mineral Wells Apartments with multiple individuals in dispute.
German forces were said to move west through occupied France toward the Spanish border. In Hong Kong Japanese attackers thrust into central British posts at Mount Cameron but were repelled by a strong counterattack early this morning.
United States Far Eastern Army headquarters said there was no confirmation of persistent reports that 47 Japanese transports were sunk at Lingayen in northern Luzon. The dispatch offered no details on the transports' course or origin and had not appeared in prior Manila reports.
London reports show Hong Kong still under British flag as defenders, including Britons, Canadians and Indians, stubbornly resist a numerically superior Japanese force. The navy says enemy units of unspecified strength hit the atoll as Marines and island laborers repelled prior air and naval assaults. Earlier, the army noted increased Japanese troop movements on the Lingayen gulf coast near Manila and two more unsuccessful submarine attacks off the U S Pacific coast. The navy denied claims of mass ship seizures, noting only the liner President Harrison as seized.
Roswell residents launch a penny a plane fund with the slogan Remember Pearl Harbor after Roswell Civilian Defense Council approval. Clardy's Dairy donates quart milk bottles for contributions as businesses display them and the Chamber of Commerce sends raised funds to the government war chest.
Mrs M L Norton, organization chairman for the American Woman's Volunteer Service, urges that the defense message reach all readers with the same thoroughness as classified ads. She hopes the public will be organized for defense and believes they will join the effort.
