Lieutenant Found Guilty Of Contempt

Army Lt. Henry Howe Jr. 23 was found guilty by a five officer court martial in El Paso for contempt toward the President and conduct unbecoming an officer over a Viet Nam policy protest. Sentencing later. punishment range includes dishonorable discharge or three years in prison. Howe expressed remorse and desire to remain in the Army.

Americans jailed in East Berlin for aiding refugees

Two American men Moses Reese Herrin and Frederick Matthews were sentenced in Potsdam to eight years for helping East Germans flee to West Berlin. A Tennessee girl Mary Helen Battle was detained on suspicion of aiding flight. One of the charges involved smuggling a 13 year old East Berlin girl hidden in a car.

Bride Refuses License Over Number 13 Voids Record

In Chaves County a prospective bride balked at a marriage license ending in the number 13 after the deputy clerk flagged page 25613. Despite explanations that numbers cannot be skipped the bride persisted until County Clerk Dorothy Herring voided the license with the number 25613 shown as void in the record.

The Texas White House said any Christmas pause in bombings of North Viet Nam would be decided in Saigon, not by President Johnson. Joseph Laitin, assistant press secretary, noted that Secretary of State Rusk’s earlier statement covered on the ground truces or firings of any kind.

Jane Nelson to Represent New Mexico in Long Beach Pageant

Jane Nelson of New Mexico plans to compete in the American Beauty Pageant in Long Beach California August 3 to 14 1966. She will assume the new title after the May selection of a Miss Arizona.
