District Attorney George L Reese Jr announces strict enforcement of the Lane liquor law. He outlines permits authorizing sale with meals, penalties for bar service without meals, and consequences for disorderly premises, intoxicated customers, or premises used as places of drinking. Violators face license revocation and padlocking for one year, with no consumption on original-pack liquor sales.
Washington December 22 AP The house ways and means committee tentatively approved a liquor tax bill expected to raise 470 million including beer revenue A $2 per gallon levy on distilled spirits was adopted by 13 ayes to 9 present Republicans The administration plan to allocate liquor revenue to states was rejected and a flat 5 per barrel rate was set on beer The current 3.2 beer rate remains at 5 while all higher alcohol content brews face a 6 per barrel tax
Chicago police killed three gunmen in a brief Rogers Park apartment raid while pursuing John Dillinger era figures. The dead men were later identified as Louis Katzewitz, 28, Charles Tattlebaum, 30, alias Chuck Tilden, and Sam Ginsburg, 33, linked to a 1932 Union National Bank robbery. The $52,000 loot was taken in that holdup.
Beverly Hills remarked Mussolini’s talk as dark satire as he cites a study of 92 mothers with 1288 children, mocking slogans of “a baby in every arm” while arguing nations cannot prosper by car budgets or autos. He warns dictating regimes rely on birth quotas rather than war readiness.
New Mexico Attorney General E. K. Neumann said in a long distance call to Will Robison that he was pleased with G. L. Mr and Mrs Joe E Smith of Roswell escaped serious injury when their 193 Ford truck rolled at 815 PM about 40 miles west of Roswell near Picacho. Mrs Smith suffered painful bruises while Mr Smith was unhurt. They were returning from El Paso with fruit and swerved to avoid standing women beside a parked passenger car, driving into the ditch and tipping the truck onto its side. The fruit was damaged but the truck was not badly damaged.
Santa Fe reports say the governor urged New Mexico residents to join a united effort to enforce the Lane liquor law. He called it a major state need and blamed both wet and dry factions for noncompliance, praising Judge Otero for penalties on minors’ liquor sales while noting enforcement officers rarely present cases.
Claude Simpson of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce received a letter from George T. McQuillen chairing the Lincoln County CWA committee stating that a CWA crew will start work next Tuesday on Pine Lodge road from the Chaves Lincoln county line west. The crew of 12 men will deploy three 11‑2 ton trucks and four teams though equipment limits prevent first class surfacing. McQuillen said cooperation with the chamber is valued and that Pine Lodge work in Chaves county is part of the county CWA program.
A De Soto coupe stolen from Carl Johnson in December from 811 North Pennsylvania was recovered in Austin, Texas. Sheriff’s office contacted Austin authorities to hold the car and any companions, but no reply was received by press time. The vehicle, routed through Smith Motor Co. and Gallup, New Mexico, allegedly returned to Roswell and was sold to Carl Johnson, a secondhand dealer.
Albuquerque December 22 AP State mine inspector Warren Bracewell predicted a new silver mining boom in New Mexico after President Roosevelt announced the purchase of silver He said the move would unlock dormant properties in the Silver City country and attract thousands of inquiries Bracewell noted New Mexico produced nearly 60 million ounces of silver worth about 51 million dollars before 1930 highlighting strong past boom years especially 1915 1929 and 1930
AP dispatch from Hong Kong reports13 Nanking government planes bombing Chanchow in Fukien with heavy casualties and extensive damage. Fighting along the Chekiang border sees Revolutionary government troops dispersed by Nanking forces. Two Nanking planes reported missing.
Albuquerque New Mexico December 22 AP Postmaster Roy I Cook said postal receipts in the city are 800 higher than last year despite lower postage rates since Christmas. The gain comes amid holiday mail volume and efficiency improvements.
Washington reports that the seventy third congress will open January 3 with many historic issues. Democratic leaders hope for a harmonious session to push Roosevelt's program while some conservatives and Republicans plan sharp critiques. Continued on page 5.
President Roosevelt proclaimed a program to coin half of newly mined silver at 64.5 cents an ounce, with the rest returned to producers, aiming to lift silver prices and boost mining wealth. The measure, linked to the London silver agreement, accompanies continued gold purchases and an expanded RFC fund to 100 million dollars. Western mining leaders react with cautious optimism as idle properties may reopen with improved prices.

Silver City New Mexico reports the dedication of a two mile Apache National Forest road along the Blue river in Arizona linking CCC camps at Pueblo Park and Blue Ranger station. The Blue community gains an outlet via Pueblo Park and Pine Lawn to trade in Silver City instead of Holbrook Arizona, ending repeated river crossings. CC camps completed the project after six months of construction.
Arturo Sandoval sought a share of Filberto Gallegos vast Harding county estate in New Mexico. The district court jury could not reach a verdict after Gallegos died last year leaving his property to his widow. Senator Carl Hatch represented Sandoval, former Judge H A Riker represented the estate, and Judge Harry L Patton delayed verdict awaiting jury decision.
