Banks Fail Twenty Million in Chicago

Chicago banks led by the Chicago National Bank the Home Savings Bank and the Equitable Trust Company controlled by John R Walsh were declared insolvent by the Comptroller of the Currency. Depositors are protected by the Clearing House arrangement as officers resign and Walsh and his wife transfer all property. Bedford National Bank in Indiana reports Walsh's troubles but continues ordinary operations. Wall Street reacts with shock and rapid stock liquidation while foreign consuls report injuries in Shanghai amid riots and anti foreign agitation.

Eleven Reclamation Projects Under Way

Washington D C December bulletin from the geological survey notes the Secretary of the Interior approved the Rio Grande reclamation project in Texas and New Mexico and the Carlsbad project in New Mexico. Together these push the total to 24 projects with eleven under way reclaiming 1 303 600 acres at a cost 37 028 571 dollars. Since start 77 miles main canals 54 miles distributing canals 186 miles of ditches and 147 bridges built. Over 9 350 000 cubic yards earth excavated and 3 one half miles of tunnels driven.

Berlin dispatch reports 300 killed during street fighting at Mitau the capital of Courtland. In Lennewarden revolutionists freed prisoners and shot the assistant district governor and his secretary, their bodies cast into the river. St. Petersburg notes a general strike to start December 20 pending Moscow approval.

Brick Trust Busted Surrenders in Chicago Court

The brick trust of Chicago surrendered to State's Attorney Healy in court and was fined $18,000. Indicted were the company, several officials, and two labor leaders for conspiring to restrain competition and limit brick production and sales in Chicago.

Damage suit on trial in district court

District court sits to hear J. B. Russell against Mrs. S. L. Overman over a $1500 claim arising from an alleged arrest for stealing a back-spring last July. Russell formerly ran the Overman blacksmith shop. Federal court opened and closed for today. U. S. Attorney W. H. Llewellyn expected tonight.

Senate committee chairmen named in Washington

Senate committees were announced today with chairs including Appropriations Allison Finance Aldrich Foreign Relations Cullom Judiciary Clark Wyoming Military Affairs Warren Naval Affairs Hale Territories Beveridge Fred Ashenhust arrived from Henrietta Texas to take a half interest in his brother John’s marble shop.
