Vast plan for using natural resources proposed to Roosevelt

Washington dispatch reports a 100000 word National Resources board plan proposing a six year public works budget, a ten billion dollar reserve fund, and coordinated federal state local programs. It calls for retiring 75000000 acres of marginal lands, subsistence homesteading, federal control of minerals, watershed surveys, erosion loss reduction, expanded social public works, and a permanent five member planning staff to guide long term policy.

SIFT Demands For Less Work And More Wages

A three man NRA panel begins evaluating automobile labor demands for a shorter work week and a minimum yearly wage. In Detroit Labor Secretary Perkins sees a new program for developing natural resources that could put every able bodied American to work. Henry Ford’s spokesman in Detroit says real wages have not yet arrived. AFL leader Matthew Woll accuses Sloan of trying to undermine the Roosevelt recovery with a low wage push. Old Timers elect J F Hinkle president at meeting

Members of the Old Timers Association met at Elza White’s home and elected J F Hinkle to fill the unexpired term of the late President J Phelps White. A barbecue and Old Timers Day at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair were discussed with plans for a spring meeting to arrange the barbecue and parade.

Lions International President Visits Roswell Club

Vincent C. Haskell of Chicago, Lions International president, visited the Roswell Lions at noon with guests from civic groups and newspapers. District Governor Don Hoover praised the club and predicted Roswell’s example would aid district progress in 1955. Haskell urged Lions to focus on civic work and warned against letting others live our lives for us.

Ralph Higgins Killed in California Oil Rig Accident

Ralph Higgins formerly of Roswell was killed Sunday in Long Beach California in an oil well rigging accident. He left Roswell about eleven years ago and was part of the renowned Higgins family. his father Fred Higgins served as sheriff of Chaves county for several years.

Liquor Seized in Roswell Retailer Charged

Federal agents reported the seizure of 18 gallons of non tax paid whiskey and six cases of tax paid whiskey from a Roswell liquor store on Saturday. The store operator, identified as Speaker, was charged with operating as a retailer without a retailers tax stamp and possessing illegal whiskey.

Fairbanks to Attend Tingley Inauguration

Douglas Fairbanks, the actor who campaigned for Clyde Tingley, said in a letter he would try to attend the New Mexico governor elect’s inauguration on January 1 if he can arrange plane connections. He hoped to be in Santa Fe for the ceremony.

Madrid miners filed grievance with labor board over wage and hours

In Santa Fe on December 17 AP reports Madrid district where 380 United Mine Workers members walked out last Thursday presented grievances to the regional bituminous coal labor board. William Zurek outlined two main complaints: refusal to negotiate a contract since organization in May and failure to pay wages stated in the coal code. He cited excess hours paid as overtime and the distribution of hours among workers. The three board members attended. Oscar Huber represented operators and could present later.
