Officers back LeMay view on bombers as interim plan
Many Air Force officers agree with Gen. LeMay that a new advanced manned strategic bomber is needed, not a modified TFX. McNamara would spend 1.75 billion to adapt the TFX into a bomber, while a full FB111 program could cost up to 11.5 billion for 200 planes. The Air Force hopes FB111 remains an interim step with first flight in 1968 and combat readiness that year.
