Therapist Believes in Fairy Tales to Aid Counseling
RUIDOSO Lincoln County Mental Health Association documents Director J L Wilson uses fairy tales to assist therapy for adults and children. He cites stories as a way to bypass defenses and communicate unconsciously through metaphors. Wilson contrasts fairy tales with fables and myths and notes tales like Cinderella and Pinocchio help children manage emotions. He favors oral storytelling or edited editions with few illustrations and recommends Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment.
