Conscience clears as a former Roswell grocer receives a repentant note with $2 from a former employee who admits theft. The item shifts to Roswell Army Air Field reunion plans for next August and recalls 1937 prices and local dining spots in Roswell and nearby towns.
Workers walked out in a dispute over work assignments causing a halt to port activity with 57 ships sidelined including three passenger vessels after the New York Shipping Association called a partial walkout earlier this week an illegal strike.
Four oil producing state governors telegrammed President Nixon after the Interstate Oil Compact Commission session. They urged reconsideration of two orders aimed at curbing crude and gasoline price hikes while praising the import quota system and calling for remedial federal legislation amid a fuel crisis.

The Senate Finance Committee finished a bill to raise Social Security benefits by nine billion dollars yearly, but heavy amendments threaten its fate. Senate leaders set a Tuesday floor debate with adjournment looming and some members urge dropping the bill to save only the Social Security increases before Congress ends its 1970 session. The measure would raise benefits for 26 million people by at least 10 percent starting January 1.
The House Commerce Committee approved delaying a nationwide railroad strike until March 1 by a 19 to 14 vote. Chairman Staggers and Rep Adams voiced concerns that the measure may not avert a walkout. No wage rise was included, while other lawmakers urged stronger action and direct wage hikes as part of the delay.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a 1.525 billion dollar foreign aid package, adding 990 million for overseas assistance including 500 million for arms to Israel. It earmarks 85 million for military and 70 million for economic aid to Cambodia, with 150 million for South Korea and a 15 million cut for Vietnam land reform.
Chaves County deputy Lloyd Otero entered an Auto Route West trailer unarmed to rescue an 18 month old as Thomas Henry Smith, 44, armed with two high powered rifles and a .22 rifle, threatened to kill the child. After a three hour standoff, Smith surrendered and was arrested on battery aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
A rash of fires around the dry mountain area prompts state and federal forest agency inspections. In the last 48 hours, six forest fires plus a seventh mobile home fire occurred, mostly on state forest land with no structural damage. State forester Ray Bell said the scene is typical for the region and noted 20 fires on state forest land statewide in the past week.
