Rep. W. O. Culbertson Jr. says he will sponsor a repeal of the 1945 loss leader law, opposing fellow Democrats Morgan Nelson and Fred Cole who favor keeping it. The statute barred limiting advertised items or refusing sale of stock, angering area housewives and impacting grocer specials.
A Philadelphia caller disputes a whisky firm over spelling. The firm rep spells bourbon with o u r, while the painter on the roof signs burbon, prompting a humorous miscue in a city exchange.
Rio Hondo District finance chairman Floyd Childress handed a check exceeding $20,000 to Conquistador Council president Jack Danglade at a council dinner. The gift ends Roswell’s campaign segment while Dexter and Hagerman push ongoing solicitations after cotton harvest peak. An executive board was installed, including Patsy Allen, Hall Jr., Ross Malone, Don McKinney, Charles Read, and Childress. Council membership hits 5,200. top campaign target expected by January end.
A 38 year old Felicita Nelson of Santa Rosa was killed when she fell from a parked car and walked into the path of an oncoming car four miles west of Santa Rosa on U S 66. John Chester Humphrey of Albuquerque drove the fatal vehicle. The death toll on New Mexico highways for the year reached 359 versus 340 last year.
The Associated Press details New Mexico Republicans spent 129 943 on general election campaigning while Democrats used 36 075. GOP debt stood around 21 000. Democrats owed 5 379. GOP receipts totaled 134 681 with 25 000 borrowed from First National Bank Albuquerque. Major donors included T D Cornman and W E Hill at 1000 each. Bernalillo County contributed 27 638. Democrats raised most from a Albuquerque dinner headlined by Stuart Symington, grossing 23 713 with 4 120 in expenses. Major Democratic expense included 5 303 to Ward Hicks Advertising Agency Albuquerque.
Chaves County ASC mailed over 600 letters to qualified cotton producers about the upland cotton referendum on December 11. Tom Hoover urges all eligible producers to vote, noting the mailing list may be incomplete. Voting sites are the Roswell ASC office, Dexter Gin No. 5, and Hagerman gin.
In district court a $5,000 damage claim is filed for eye damage to a 7 year old. Stacey Gugliotti, by Dominic Gugliotti, sues Frank M. Haldeman of Manheim Pa for medical expenses 1,000 and pain and suffering 4,000 plus a scar 4,000 totaling 5,000.
MIAMI BEACH Fla New Mexico Gov John Simms told the Interstate Oil Compact Commission that a Harris Fulbright type gas bill has a good chance in Congress if it has White House backing. He said the President left an open door by veto message and that legislation conforming to HR 45 objectives is needed. Simms, outgoing commission chair, urged producers to unite and use tact and diplomacy to push the bill.
GREENFIELD Mass Members of the Girls Club who have been offered free lessons in knitting and baton twirling were offered a new course free lessons in contract bridge for eighth graders.
Lancaster County Virginia offers a $3 bounty for a fox tail while Richmond pays 75 cents for a nose and Northumberland pays 1.50 for two ears. Officials fear some trappers may claim payments for the same fox in multiple counties.
A jet plane during a low level strafing drill crashed on a hill at Camp Pendleton California killing the Marine pilot 1st Lt. David L. Day 26 of Burlingame California and two infantrymen Cpl. George R. Parker 22 of Americus Georgia and Pvt. Raymond J. Eckert 18 of Chicago.
Roswell District office of the State Highway Department honors T. H. Card as the second employee to reach 35 years of service. E. D. McKinley presents awards to 19 district staff including ten year and five year honorees such as R. D. Bowling and Geo. Lalla. Alfredo Telles retires at 65 after 17 years with a merit certificate.
In State of New Mexico vs Roger Silva a verdict of guilty to voluntary manslaughter was returned. The July 7 stabbing of Eliseo Gonzales led to the guilty finding by a jury at 3:47 p.m. after deliberations following closing arguments by Pat Hanagan for the state and G T Watts for the defense.
In Norman Oklahoma Elvin Homer Thornton 16 and Elizabeth 13 were ending their two month marriage when a shotgun blast killed Elizabeth. Elvin and his father C E Thornton 69 and Elizabeths stepfather 32 were questioned after the gun fired during a struggle at Elvins Moore area home.
Charles C. Finucane will speak December 14 at Gary Air Force Base for the transfer from Air Force to Army jurisdiction. The final Army primary flight training class trained by the Air Force will graduate the same day with about 75 student officers receiving certificates from Maj. Gen. G. P. Disosway. A civilian contract starts January for Army fixed wing training. the first class of about 100 students will report January 4.
President Eisenhower and Defense Secretary Wilson met at Augusta to begin budget talks on Pentagon plans and a 38 billion dollar defense program. He urged an end to leakage of budget figures and manpower data, observed by pool reporters, amid prior disclosures and related tensions.
Police Chief Tommy Thompson warned residents to lock cars and homes during the Christmas season. He urged securing packages left in cars and locking houses when leaving to deter thieves.
Two of eight battleships attacked at Pearl Harbor were mothballed today at the Philadelphia Naval Base. The California and Tennessee, formerly active ships, join the long term reserve as the base closes parts of its wartime fleet.

Col D C Pearson longtime superintendent at New Mexico Military Institute from 1926 to 1947 died last night in a Roswell hospital after a January admission. Born June 20 1881 in Pearlsburg Virginia he served as commandant until 1918 then returned to Pearlsburg before rejoining NMMI. He chaired local civic groups and has an auditorium named for him. He is survived by three sons three daughters 14 grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral arrangements by Ballard Funeral Home.

Roswell City Schools report 7132 students enrolled at end of the third month with an average daily attendance of 6797. Assistant Superintendent Allred notes year over year gains of 379 in enrollment and 399 in ADA, signaling growing need for more classrooms across elementary, junior high, and senior high levels. The junior high shows the largest percentage rise, near 20 percent, foreshadowing strain on high school facilities within years. Page 20.
A 28 year old woman Renda Barron was rushed to St Marys Hospital with head injuries scalp wounds and deep lacerations after a domestic incident. Her 29 year old husband Robert Barron airman surrendered a shotgun and was placed in county jail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Police were called at 1130 last night and the couple resided at 307 East Summit Street and 907 South Grand Avenue.
J. W. Daniels of Dunlap Rt. was re-elected chairman of the Chaves county ASC committee during the annual election of chairmen from four community committees at the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation office. Also re-elected were R. H. Aston as vice chairman and Clarence Wheeler as member. W. A. Sterrett and Tom Andrews were named first and second alternates.
The trials of C. J. Collins and R. W. Alexander, charged with obtaining money with intent to cheat or defraud, will be held in Lea County after Judge George T. Harris granted a change of venue and approved consolidation of the two cases, though previously set for Tuesday, December 11.
