The last American moon mission Apollo 17 is scheduled for a first night launch at 7 53 p m today. A Saturn 5 rocket towering 36 stories will carry the American trio toward the moon. See complete story on Page 2 of the Roswell Daily Record.
Roswell Independent School District Supt. Roger Luginbill and Roswell High principal Lester Benson labeled a Friday Roswell Daily Record claim that 50 percent of district students use drugs as erroneous and damaging. They questioned data sources and noted a Roswell High School survey showing about 25 percent of students having used drugs.
A district court jury in Alamogordo found Orogrande service station owner Perry Brunson not guilty of manslaughter in the Aug. 30 shooting death of Richard Falcon, a Colorado Chicano activist en route to a La Raza Unida convention in El Paso. The verdict prompted guarded exits and tense scenes as supporters and critics reacted outside the courthouse.
Erwin F. Hensch new APWA president will be honored at the New Mexico chapter convention in Roswell at the Roswell Inn. John Roark will deliver remarks at a 7 30 p.m. banquet and David King will discuss Revenue Sharing What It Means to New Mexico in a Friday session. About 50 engineers manufacturers and vendors from across the state will attend general sessions with 100 expected at the Thursday banquet. Registration starts at 8 a.m.
Ruidoso police report Esqupulia T. Montoya died from a gunshot wound after an argument outside a main street lounge. Frederick Chino, from Mescalero, was arrested moments after the shooting. Montoya was visiting Ruidoso. his hometown was not given.
National Council of Tribal Leaders meets in Washington to advise Vice President Spiro Agnew on whether the Roswell Employment Training Center should remain open. The BIA ordered its closure as part of moving control to Indians. Rod Starkey expects support to continue the center.
Western film star Rex Allen arrives in Roswell to finalize a spring cattle drive with 15 to 16 participants. The event, in cooperation with local ranchers, aims to give professionals cattle work experience, including rounding up branding and vaccinating stock, with entertainment by Allen and remarks on settling in the area.
A section of Bermeda Middle School gym roof blew off in Tuesday's wind storm and a wall began to move, prompting an off limits order. Braces were later installed to secure the wall while utilities and services faced outages and small fires caused by gusts up to 53 mph.
A 50 member parent delegation urged the Roswell Independent School District to adopt a bond issue for vocational agriculture facilities at Goddard High. The board voted to begin a district wide feasibility study, with costs estimated at 100000 to 125000 and 60 days for study completion.
