EPA orders GE to dredge Hudson River PCB waste
The EPA directs General Electric to remove 1.3 million pounds of PCBs from the Hudson River upper reach in a multi year cleanup costing about 500 million dollars. The plan dredges 2.65 million cubic yards of sediment across the river stretch toward Albany, with state review and potential federal action if GE balks.

Redistricting shifts but avoids sweeping party gains nationwide
As 2002 nears, Republicans and Democrats both face a cautious map redraw. Republicans expect a seven seat swing overall, with gains in Michigan Texas and Utah and losses in Indiana. Democrats foresee modest gains in Arizona California and North Carolina, with losses in Illinois and Utah. Competitive seats in Arizona and Nevada attract attention as court challenges loom.
