Public land measures added to defense bill
A $585 million defense bill negotiated by House and Senate panels includes expanded wilderness protections in New Mexico and other western states and a streamlining program for oil and gas permitting. Action is aimed for year end with bipartisan support but critics warn the land provisions should not be a bargaining chip. The bill also transfers management of a 140 square mile northern New Mexico preserve to the National Park Service and enables a land swap in Arizona to allow North America’s largest copper mine.
