Three district judges announce appointments for a plans steering committee on a boys' detention home to be placed 72 miles south of Artesia. Harvey Yates of Artesia is named chairman. Walter Haut of Roswell represents Chaves County, Doc Ludreth of Lovington represents Lea County, and Eddy County seat will be announced by Judge Anderson of Carlsbad.

In Santa Fe Arthur Faye Johnson claims he was framed in the Hobbs murder of William Cabrel on March 5, 1951. A grievance committee of the Santa Fe Bar Association found no basis for action after investigating the charge. Johnson, awaiting execution February 1, repeated his claim to newsmen, alleging receipts misattributed to Cabrel and describing the slaying as an attempt to protect his wife and daughters.
