A Mrs. Whitaker in the Arabella area says east Capitan Mountains turkeys are likely tame and not wild, citing hunter trouble on deeded land. She notes tame birds sometimes wander into forests, but warns hunters face risk if they mistake tame for wild.
The Senate votes today on a measure to return a 48,000 acre ancestral tract of New Mexico land to the Taos Indians with a battle possible on terms of the bill. One version approved by the Senate Interior Committee calls for exclusive use of the land, but not a trust title as the administration backed House version authorizes and the Indians want.
In Sydney the Pope prayed with leading Protestant churchmen inside Town Hall as about 10,000 watched. Outside, a small protest of about 30 demonstrators carried placards denouncing Rome, with one man briefly entering the hall before being removed. No violence occurred and the event marked the first organized hostile protest during the papal tour.
Undersecretary Roc Cirillano of Washington arrives in Mescalero this afternoon for a helicopter tour. Fred Heckman coordinates through Wendell Chino’s staff. Basque separatists kidnap the honorary West German consul in San Sebastian and hold him as 15 Basque nationalists face trial on Thursday, per the Basque Anai-Artea group citing ETA communication. Consul Eugene Beihl, age 59, is named as the hostage.

New Mexico wools earned top placings at the American Royal Wool Show in Kansas City and the Pacific International Wool Show in Portland. Judges highlighted the range state’s wool quality with champions and numerous top finishes led by Skeen Picacho and Harris Tatum among others.
Ten NATO members plan to spend about 1 billion dollars over five years on European defense, on top of current 24 billion dollar annual outlay. The package aims to share burden, maintain U.S. forces, and fund a military communications network and air raid shelters. West Germany will gift Turkey 16 transport planes worth 79 million dollars, while Britain withholds cash for shelters.
George Reese will retire from the 5th District Court, with Gov. Cargo to appoint a replacement before midnight December 31. Roswell attorney Paul Snead receives endorsements from Chaves Eddy and Lea county bars. Bruce King reportedly backs Snead. Lee Cathey also nominated for the vacancy.
