Ford weighs anti inflation tax rise in 1975 option

President Ford left open the possibility of asking Congress for an anti inflation tax increase in 1975 but said there are no plans for a tax hike this year. He outlined a belt tightening program, signaled willingness to cut defense spending, and said wage and price controls are off the table. The administration plans a $5.5 billion budget cut and a Sept. economic summit to address inflation.

Explosion Rips Through Downtown Chattanooga Killing One

A morning blast levelled four buildings in a ghetto district of Chattanooga Tennessee destroying the Starlight Lounge the Cactus Club the St James Church and a barber shop. At least 13 people were injured and a male body was found in the rubble as workmen cleared debris. Fire Chief Harry Jett said it created a 200 foot swath of destruction and investigators ruled out nothing before confirming the single fatality.

Kidnapers Sought After Mexico President’s Father-in-Law

83 year old Jose Guadalupe Zuno Hernandez, father-in-law to President Luis Echeverria, was kidnapped on a Guadalajara street. Police and troops searched Jalisco for him and the guerrillas, who reportedly demanded 1.6 million dollars and the release of political prisoners. A driver was beaten and tear gas used as the abduction occurred near the state government complex.
