Resolutions On Patriotic Issues Before The VFW

At the national encampment in Los Angeles the Veterans of Foreign Wars discussed resolutions on patriotism and elected new officers. One resolution urged Congress to outlaw the Communist party, another backed military conscription, a third pledged aid against subversive influences, and a fourth asked Congress to extend high military honors to the late Gen William L Mitchell posthumously. The body also approved measures seeking immigration limits, US citizenship for government workers, and flag salute fidelity. It also supported congressional investigation into alleged Russian fraud of disability and WW bonuses.

U. S. Amy Ready To Start Training Its Largest Peace Force

President Roosevelt moves to mobilize the national guard as a prelude to conscription. Plans call for 55 000 guardsmen to begin two years of training on Sept 15 and 165 000 more by Dec 1, totaling 220 000. If enacted, 400 000 conscripts would begin service by December, then 400 000 on April 1, 1941, with half year increments to Oct 1, 1944. A national draft would involve a lottery and serial-number drawing for call orders.

Senate Clears Peacetime Draft Bill in 58 31 Vote

In Washington the Senate passed the Burke Wadsworth peacetime conscription bill by 58 to 31 after a tense 9 hour session. The bill would require registration of men 21 to 45 and empower the government to conscript industry if needed. House action expected to begin Tuesday with differing versions under review.

Texas Democrats Form No Third Term Movement Stand

DALLAS Aug 29 Politi cal forces in Texas split over the new deal third term movement and whether Wendell Willkie should carry the state in November. Led by Mike Hogg of Houston the No Third Term Democratic party of Texas formed last night at Fair Park auditorium with 5500 capacity. Speakers attacked the third term philosophy praising Willkie as standard bearer to end what they call democracy threat and dictatorship risk. Hobb named an executive committee of 31 members representing each senatorial district.

Stricter Game Fish Law Enforcement Urged by Local Group

Chaves County Game Protective Association urged tougher enforcement of state game and fish laws at a watermelon feed in Ingalls. B B Wilson led a six member delegation to the New Mexico G P A meeting in Albuquerque September 1 2. Delegates include George Wilcox W A Losey and R L Malone Sr A C Lacer and H E Samson Roswell. The group reports 140 paid members and opposed this year’s duck season of October 14 to December 14. They prefer an open pheasant season and discussed nest protection and hay cutting issues. Ray Lynch and Raymond Stamm missed the meeting due to prior plans. About 45 attended, Wilson presiding.

Tourist Ads Have Paid Twice Over in New Mexico

Governor Miles says the 1940 tourist advertising program has paid for itself twice through higher gasoline tax receipts. He spoke at a CHAMA rally and outlined plans to expand the drive, with more rallies in Espanola and Santa Fe and a bean day in Mountainair on Saturday.

Gag Rule Invoked On Tax Bill In House

Washington August 29 The house used drastic procedure rules to push excess profits tax legislation to passage by nightfall Speaker and leaders limited debate and amendments to speed action. The measure would impose a 20 to 50 percent tax on corporate excess profits and allow defense firms to deduct portions of income over five years.

Continental Super Lodestar aircraft test flight ro m Roswell airport

A 14 passenger Super Lodestar on a Civil Aeronautics Bureau test flight landed at Roswell airport at 6 15 last night on a test run. Continental Air Lines ordered six ships built by Lockheed at Burbank California with deliveries through December. The six will replace older planes, with one unit already sold to Canada for bomber use.

Chavez Tie Talk Sparks Santa Fe Primary Debate

Governor Miles said he runs his own campaign and has no campaign tieups with Chavez or any other primary candidate. He allowed other Democrats may join rallies, while Santa Fe Democrats warned against linking Chavez to Miles establishing a coat tails effect. Barker criticized the county chairman for tying Chavez to Miles and urged breaking up political machines until after the primary.
