New Mexico Game Commission votes to auction bison herd
The New Mexico Game Commission voted to auction the state's 75 to 80 bison herd from Fort Wingate near Gallup. Officials aim to award a capture contract by year end and remove the animals in January using methods such as herding, net gunning, or narcotic immobilization. The plan includes an environmental assessment and safeguarding about 200 archaeological sites. Fort Wingate, closed in 1993, is slated for transfer to the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo in 1999.

Retraining for APD on domestic violence cases
In Bernalillo County about half of domestic violence cases are dismissed by judges due to noncooperation by victims or inability to locate them. The district attorney's office handles roughly 5,000 misdemeanor and 500 felony DV cases annually and is prompting retraining for police on evidence gathering. Chief Deputy DA Pete Dinelli notes about 60 percent of dismissals stem from victims changing their minds or being unreachable.
