Washington AP reports a reduced Eisenhower administration budget aims for lower taxes and avoids debt-limit increases. Humphrey said the cash outlays drop to 41.7 billion this year with a 380 million deficit and a 271.1 billion national debt.
American POWs freed in the early days of the war report beatings and torture before the truce while others describe a death march. The Red captivity tallies show 2422 Americans returned and 9819 of 12776 Allied POWs listed as released. Pfc Reuben K Kimball Jr from Baytown Texas witnessed the execution of 30 US prisoners.
A five year old, David Thornberry of Corpus Christi, was killed instantly 12 miles east of Gallup on Highway 66 when a car pulling a trailer overturned while attempting to pass a truck. Four other occupants, June Thornberry 2, Pat Thornberry 9, Barbara Thornberry 3, and Jack Kaler 30, suffered minor injuries.

A public hearing Tuesday September 8 at 7 30 p m in City Hall council chamber will air five zoning amendments. A protest by 20 percent of affected property owners can block changes without a three fourths council vote. Changes include extending a west boundary to create more multiple family zones and converting several areas from single family to duplex. A special permit under Ordinance 621 may allow a Union Avenue parking strip.
In a dramatic capture by FBI agents posing as campers, two top Communist leaders Robert George Thompson and Sidney Steinberg were seized with three associates in a Sierra Nevada cabin. Thompson, a 1951 Smith Act convict, faces new commitment in New York. Steinberg, arrested on bail, awaits removal proceedings. Additional suspects Carl Edwin Rass Samuel I. Coleman and Shirley Keith Kremen were jailed in San Francisco on bail.
In Oakland California four year old Marlon Ellis, fed via feeding tube due to a stomach disorder and esophageal ulcer, underwent a four hour operation by three doctors to create a new connection between his esophagus and stomach. Doctors expect him to eat and drink normally within a few days.
Otis A. Haley of Lovington New Mexico police was in Roswell on a business trip yesterday confirming his official duties and whereabouts.
Twenty four New Mexico prisoners freed from Communist captivity including Cpl Candido Mascarenas of Vadito and Pfc Tony Apodaca of Vaughn. Vadito residents welcomed Mascarenas with two masses planned for gratitude as families rejoiced and awaited Candido’s homecoming while Apodaca’s father spoke of pride and relief after two years apart.
In a Bronx apartment a distraught jeweler shot and killed his wife Ruth 36 and their two sons Stanley 9 and Harvey 5 before fatally shooting himself. Police found the parents dead on arrival. the boys died later.
President Eisenhower began a full vacation day at a Colorado Rockies ranch owned by Aksel Nielsen. He planned to loaf and refrain from trout fishing due to a sore elbow, staying through Tuesday with limited access for reporters. Accompanying him were Nielsen, Gen. Lucius D. Clay, Charles H. Tompkins, and Mrs. Eisenhower’s mother.
Engineer John Elsie, 62, died from burns after a fiery collision between the Portland Rose locomotive and an oil truck at a crossing near Ault Colorado. Fireman Paul Evans, 33, of Denver, was found dead at the scene yesterday morning.

The El Paso Natural Gas Co. four state pipeline project begins work in Chaves County New Mexico with 55 miles of pipe unloaded at Melena 17 miles north of Roswell. Construction started August 1 and runs to November 15.

A four engine B-50 from the 97th Bomb Wing at Biggs AFB landed safely near Caprock after two engines failed on return. All 11 crew members escaped injury as Maj. Raymond Gottner executed a wheels-up crash landing under an August moon.
U S Air Force reports giant B36 bombers flown to Japan are engaging with other aircraft in a realistic combat type Far East exercise within 700 miles of Vladivostok. The operation named Big Stick involves heavy and medium bombers reconnaissance planes and fighters with secrecy over numbers and duration. Maj. Gen. Walter C. Sweeney Jr. directs missions from Yokota Air Base as more B36s land at undisclosed bases.
