Explorer V failed to reach orbit after a smooth Jupiter C flight from Cape Canaveral. The satellite transmitted briefly then faded, while scientists study telemetry to understand the unexpected end and the deadly radiation environment at high altitudes remains under investigation.
Pvt Elvis Presley said his father would stay near him during his Army career. Returning from his mother's funeral in Memphis, Presley pledged to report to Ft Hood and take his father with him wherever he is sent, reportedly to Germany. They will keep their Memphis home.
Edmonton police charged 65 year old Jim Alex with murder after he killed Richard Butler a 44 year old businessman and councilman, and wounded Fire Chief Barney Waygood during a five hour gun battle from a fortified trench in front of his boxcar home.
Ramon Moreno Perez of Vaughn was stabbed on the right side near the stomach and taken to St Mary's Hospital Saturday afternoon. Police seized Eliza Riza at 103 S Montana Ave in connection with the incident at La Bonita Bar. Police also report a burglary of a .22 revolver from a car and note a busy local court day with multiple DWI and vagrancy cases.
State Corporation Commission chairman James F Lamb said 16 corporations received charters last week. Of these 13 were domestic and three were out of state.
The 85th Congress closes after eight months of work with large gains in foreign aid, sending lawmakers home to campaign for the 435 House seats and 34 Senate seats. The final compromise on foreign aid totals about 652 million less than Eisenhower requested, ending in a near midnight plenary. The adjournments followed an 18 hour session with praise between Republicans and Democrats and a note of goodwill to President Eisenhower.

The U.S. ordered precautionary naval measures and planned joint exercises to maintain readiness and defend Formosa under treaty obligations.
In Amsterdam 25 nations convene the International Astronautical Federation to explore space propulsion reaching 100 000 to 1 000 000 mph. Journeys to Mars could shrink to weeks or months with atomic or light powered engines as scientists discuss new propulsion and habitability for interplanetary travel.
The atomic powered submarine Nautilus returned to New York after a record 3500 mile undersea voyage from Portland England. A harbor welcome involved police helicopters, Navy destroyers, Coast Guard cutters and fireboats with crowds along Manhattan and Brooklyn. Rear Adm. Hyman Rickover and President Eisenhower's representative joined ceremonies while the ship paused three miles of Manhattan shoreline for spectators. Skipper William R Anderson praised the nuclear propulsion as reliable as the craft rode calm seas.

A lease option or land swap for park areas is discussed as planners prepare subdivision actions ahead of tomorrow night’s council meeting.
