Gov. Toney Anaya says he will again ask the New Mexico Investment Council to divest from American corporations doing business in South Africa. The proposal echoes a prior measure rejected 5-2 in April and slated for the Aug. 30 council meeting.
Federal investigators are examining New Mexico State Treasurer Earl Hartley and Gov. Toney Anaya as part of a broad corruption probe. A grand jury subpoena covered the officials’ financial records, with no charges filed. U.S. Attorney Bill Lutz declined comment.
Leonard Davis, 26, was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in district court of the first degree murder of Artesia resident Rhonda Staples whose body was found near Lake Arthur on September 16, 1984. Jurors deliberated after closing arguments by defense and prosecution.
Frank C. Papen of Rio Grande Bankshares says his holding company is negotiating to buy Moncor Bank NA of Roswell. He cites a 50 to 70 percent chance of completion and notes Roswell’s potential. Moncor reports large losses and nil net worth at its Roswell and Hobbs branches, with overall assets around $18 million and stockholders’ equity of negative $4.2 million.
A Boeing 737 carrying 131 passengers and six crew aborted takeoff after an engine explosion at 7 am. Flames engulfed the craft, 54 people died, 83 survived, many leaped from seats and escaped down chutes as fire crews responded. Prime Minister Thatcher visited to comfort survivors.
An audit by the Federal Election Commission faults Cranston for President Committee for overspending 12454 dollars with 734 insufficient fund checks. The FEC says the issue shows disregard for funds and notes large scale bad checks by a publicly funded campaign.
Victoria and Richard Ricardo in Fairfax adopt an abandoned baby alligator from Peninsula Humane Society. They already keep two reptiles and say the gator thrashes at night, but they feel safe since the animal is indifferent to humans except during feeding.
