New Construction Scraped Ground for M E Building Start

New Hondo church to rise on Fifth Street corner

A. L. W. Nilsson of Hondo Stone ManufacturingCo signed a contract with the First Methodist Episcopal Church building committee for a new concrete stone church at Kentucky Avenue and Fifth Street. Cazier Interview on Damages Suit Against Witteman

Big Fire Destroys East Portland Business District

A blaze that began in a restaurant on East Stark Street destroyed four blocks of East Portland's business center, mainly shacks and Chinese laundries. About 15000 dollars in losses were estimated with only a third covered by insurance, affecting several notable blocks and the elevated roadways.

Roswell Club Rooms Turned Over to Visiting Teachers

Roswell Commercial Club welcomed the visiting teachers from Chaves County Normal Institute with a reception last night. The rooms were opened to the young ladies who staff the training of Young Emera in the country. A Mexican quartet provided music while Prof. Thompson opened the program with devotional exercises. Miss Helen Norfleet played a piano solo as part of the day’s proceedings.

Fine Paid by Friends in Artesia Land Troubles

In Artesia New Mexico on August 22 E F Hardwick of Roswell defeated attorney J B Atkeson after a street quarrel over land business. Hardwick was fined 11 dollars and citizens gathered a public subscription to pay it, using dime donations to show support, with ten cent limits to include many contributors.

Loomis Visits Dexters Then Heads to Denver Home

L. M. Loomis, guest of Charles R. Tallman in Dexter, departed Friday for Denver for a week en route to his home in North Bennington Vermont. He traveled from Cuba where he made an investment and is attracted by the Pecos Valley with possible land propositions under consideration.

McCune Family Arrives From Leavenworth for Valley Visit

W. G. McCune and his family came from Leavenworth Kansas to visit his brother R. H. McCune and relatives and to explore settling in the Valley. They were joined by Miss Ida McCune who has studied piano and voice music with top instructors in the East.

Yellow Fever in New Orleans Report

Showers offered some relief from the heat but little else in the yellow fever outlook. New cases since 6 p.m. Monday totaled 11, bringing the running total to 1,457 with 6 new deaths and 211 total deaths.

An 81 year old woman, Mrs Mary T Wood, departed Roswell this morning to return to her home in Fairland Texas. She has stayed six months with her son W P Wood and reports the Roswell climate improved her appetite and vitality. She will live with her younger sons in Fairland.
