Capin to sell full Capin Mercantile stock to Family Bargain
Capin Mercantile Corp led by Mark Ross Capin says shareholders signed a letter of intent to sell 100 percent of the stock to Family Bargain Corp. The deal aims to sign a contract within two weeks and close in October, with Capin operating 31 Factory 2-U stores in Arizona New Mexico and Texas and a Nogales department store. Family Bargain Corp operates 102 Family Bargain Center stores in six western states. Capin cites peso devaluation weak apparel demand and intense competition as reasons for restructuring and seeking cash and preserving jobs while continuing to provide low priced merchandise. Family Bargain president John A. Selzer says the move expands off price reach into Texas and strengthens the company in the West. The two entities will maintain separate vendor credit lines and continue to operate acquired stores under the Factory 2-U name. Capin Mercantile, founded by Hyman Capin in Nogales in 1922, grew to 38 stores becoming a major southern Arizona company.
