Kenneth Jess Porter, Marina Oswald Porter’s husband, is jailed on a threatening bodily harm charge after a reported gun threat. In a jailhouse interview Porter denies ever carrying a gun and cites possible publicity for Marina Oswald’s actions.
Hundreds of demonstrators including concentration camp survivors clashed with police as West German Ambassador Rolf Pauls presented credentials to President Zalman Shazar. Children joined chants reading Pauls go home while police kept the crowd back during a 30 minute ceremony and guard of honor.
Ontario Calif uses Gary Ovitt four hit pitching with 12 strikeouts to beat Kailua Hawaii 6 1 in the Region 8 American Legion baseball opener at Fair Park. Ovitt also drives in a run with a third inning double and a fourth inning three run homer while Hawaii must face the loser's bracket.
The first of three test wells west of Roswell has reached 800 feet as Lane Drilling Co. conducts electric log tests. City officials plan a pumping test next week to assess water depth and quantity. If water is adequate, water rights may shift from encroached existing wells.
SANTA FE RP Lovington attorney Cliff Payne was named to the Eastern New Mexico University board of regents for a term ending January 1 1967. Campbell also announced appointments to Lincoln County Memorial Commission Osteopathic Examiners Board and other bodies with terms expiring 1969 and 1970.
The House approved a 3.36 billion foreign aid authorization by a 243 to 150 vote and sent the measure to the Senate where action was expected next week.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP heavy thunderstorm and low signal reliability forced postponement of the Gemini 5 eight day mission with astronauts L Gordon Cooper Jr and Charles Conrad Jr. The delay came as engineers investigated a commutator fault and hydrogen boiler boiloff while rain drenched the launch area.
World famed oilfield firefighter Red Adair controlled a blown-out well 50 miles east of Roswell where a 110 foot geyser rose for more than 24 hours. No injuries were reported. The Stoltz and Co. well near U S 380 west of Tatum was capped with a 6000 pound head after 3 to 4 hours of heavy equipment use.
In Delta Junction Alaska an Anchorage man Richard Limbecker faced a 1500 pound bison that tumbled into a basement through a coal chute. Workers removed a wall and built a ramp for escape after the animal proved belligerent, and the buffalo slipped away when left unattended.
The state logged scattered rain with Clayton recording the highest total in the past 24 hours at 1.10 inches. Roswell had 0.12 inches, with other readings including Raton Pass 0.05, Las Vegas 0.17, Tucumcari 0.68, Grants 0.02, Truth or Consequences 0.13, Deming 0.04, Holloman AFB 0.32, Silver City 0.10, Socorro 0.04, Corona 0.07, Albuquerque 0.15, Clovis 0.53, and Santa Fe 0.10.
Joy Lynne Evans, a 4 year old in Ventura California, remained in critical condition after 17 days of waiting for chicken pox to appear as a possible treatment. Her mother Sharon Evans 24 said exposure was a last resort but doctors warned chicken pox is not a recognized leukemia treatment.
