Clint Brooks of Corona arrived yesterday for business and plans to return tomorrow. John Cummins, formerly from Roswell, now works in New York City as a chauffeur and is nephew of J Q Cummins of Roswell.

An 8 30 morning fire alarm was sounded for a blaze in a pile of old crates behind the Roswell Gas Company office on Main Street. Firemen and bystanders quickly contained the fire, with onlookers aiding until the scene was controlled.

Scott Saturday. sister Sylvia joined them, and Mrs. Cooley with children planned to visit Fort Scott again tomorrow.
Roswell residents report a cutting affray in Elida last Friday after a poker dispute in a saloon. L Fourd and a real estate man clashed. Fourd was cut in the neck and fled north toward J. C. Hill’s area. A deputy sheriff arrested him. he was fined 25 dollars plus costs.
Harry Jaffa came back Saturday from a three week business trip to St Louis Chicago and eastern markets where he shopped for fall and winter goods. Capt Reid returned Sunday from Chicago. Hearte of Lake Arthur was here on business. Sam McKinstry arrived from Hagerman. Frantois Bailey of Hagerman visited relatives. Flo Thompson left for Denver after two weeks here. W F Osborne from Hagerman attended the institute. Sarah Finney went to Elida for three weeks with home folks. James Forstad of Western Grocery Co left for Palestine Texas on a ten day trip. J R Peck from lower Penasco area attended the institute. City Clerk Fred Beck looked well today. A daughter was born Sunday to Mr and Mrs W W Curry of Snyder Texas who have been here seeking a location.
The Chaves County Teachers Institute opened at the Central school in this city with fifty teachers present for the opening session the largest attendance in county history. Rev. John H. Murray delivered an address as classes formed for two weeks of work with daily sessions from eight to twelve.
John H. McKinstry returned Sunday night from a trip to Kansas City. Don Finley left Sunday night for Valentine Texas, where he is working on a ranch. He had been here four weeks visiting with his wife, home folks and friends.
Mrs. F. G. Baker of El Moro ranch and her guest Miss Eula Spivey of Little Rock Arkansas are visiting Roswell friends for a few days. Mrs. C. F. Joyce and two children departed for Nashville Tennessee to visit relatives and will return late October.
Mrs C. FE. Drake and her daughter departed this morning for their Columbus Ohio home after spending ten days in the area with Wm. L. Heitmann.
Miss Pauline Shelley and Miss Grace Wetherald arrived this morning from Hagerman for the institute. Miss Wetherald is a teacher in the Roswell city schools.
Miss May and Charley Higgins depart this morning for Beat Rice Nebraska after a two week visit with the families of Samuel Eccles and John Wheeler at South Spring.
R. C. Fleming arrived this morning after a week visiting Artesia Lake Arthur and other southern points and has decided to remain in Roswell.
