In Johannesburg police said two black men were killed and 152 people detained in one of the largest post‑emergency law sweeps since the special measures began July 21 to curb nearly a year of rioting.
The Police Board selected Maj. M J Payne of Roswell as the new chief to succeed Maurice Cordova on Sept 1. Payne, 51, is currently southern zone commander overseeing eight districts south of Interstate 40 and will move to Santa Fe as acting chief once he winds down in Roswell. The board met nine hours in closed session before unanimously approving the appointment with Gov. Anaya in attendance. Cordova retires Aug. 31.
A car packed with about 550 pounds of dynamite exploded outside a crowded east Beirut supermarket killing at least 50 people and wounding 100. Most victims were women with children among the dead. rescue teams feared more victims buried under debris as crews fought fires and searched basements and the sea. Police did not identify any attackers.
