Rites Set Monday for Area Artist Martha Kennedy
Graveside services for artist Martha Kennedy 83 will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at South Park Cemetery. Kennedy taught art in the Southwest for 40 years and lived in Roswell and Gallup before returning to Roswell 12 years ago to live with her daughter. She was born September 3, 1884 in Richhill Missouri and died Friday at Sunset Villa Nursing Home. Survivors include her daughter, a brother Ernest Marquardt and four nephews. The Rev. W A Wheat will conduct the services at Ballard Funeral Home where her body lies in state from 10 a.m. today until service time.

George McGill of McCarthy’s national staff said Ortiz joined high level strategy talks at the Shorefront Hotel and would return with plans for a press conference upon arrival.

More than 5 400 cab drivers and 600 mechanics walked off at midnight, idling over 80 percent of Chicago cabs. Seattle Power Outage After Underground Vault Explosion
A short circuit fire in an underground cable vault caused a violent explosion in Seattle's business district. Three 13,000 volt lines melted and a 60 foot high manhole cover was launched. Power failed for over three hours across a 40 block area as fires and broken windows disrupted the city. A bystander, Alfred Evan of Tacoma, was burned.
