Soviet MIRV tests widen gap in arms balance

Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger announced that the Soviet Union has demonstrated multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles on at least two missiles and possibly more, signaling a narrowed technological gap and likely delaying prospects for a new U S Soviet agreement. He estimated deployment of combat-ready MIRV missiles by 1979 with a potential parity by the mid- to late 1980s and said submarines may follow later.

Phase 4 gas price controls extended to Aug 31

The Cost of Living Council extends the gasoline and diesel price freeze through Aug 31 under Phase 4. New ceilings set for Sept 1 must be displayed on about one million pumps. Retailers may use a minimum 7 cent markup, with higher markups allowed if Jan 10 levels were higher.

Fire destroys Mountain View Baptist Church in Roswell area

A fire at Mountain View Baptist Church on Mountain View Road south of Roswell was reported at 2 32 a m. Fire crews from Roswell and East Grand Plains battled the blaze for about three hours and six minutes. The building was a total loss and the cause was undetermined. In a separate item, Senator Pete Domenici announced a 90190 Head Start grant to Chaves Community Action Program in Roswell to fund a nine month part day program for 106 underprivileged children in Chaves County.

Nixon signs public works bill funding Brantley Dam project

President Nixon signed the public works appropriations bill authorizing 325000 dollars for planning Brantley Dam on the Pecos River near Carlsbad. The $45.6 million project, sponsored by Rep. Harold Runnels, was authorized last October 21 and required the conference committee to retain the planning funds after they were omitted in the House bill.

Bernalillo County considers obscenity ordinance

A Bernalillo County Commission debate on a proposed antiobscenity ordinance was cut short as Commissioner Lucy Jaramillo left to host guests. The measure would ban obscene materials with private possession exempted. jury trials would apply. Debates continue next Tuesday with public referendum consideration.

Four NMMI cadets enter no contest pleas in manslaughter case

Four former New Mexico Military Institute cadets charged with voluntary manslaughter pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in Fifth Judicial District Court. Sammy Burke Jr Gary Shaw Lonnie Wagner and Robert Winkler entered the plea. Sentencing deferred for one year with probation under the Department of Corrections. If compliant they may withdraw the plea and seek dismissal. Prosecutor J Lee Cathey and defense B R Baldock represented the parties.
