Nyad and Taylor Withdraw From Cuba to Florida Swim Attempt
Diana Nyad aged 28 and Stella Taylor aged 46 quit the 103 mile Cuba to Florida crossing as winds and currents pushed them off course. Nyad cried as navigator Rich du Moulin urged retreat after more than 70 miles and 41 hours in rough seas. Taylor, who had neared the coast after 32 hours, called it quits 18 miles from shore amid nausea and jellyfish stings. Nyad had highlighted money ambitions with sponsorships and news rights, while Taylor rose from obscurity with her marathon swimming pedigree.
