Will Rogers and Wiley Post Die in Alaska Air Crash

The bodies of Wiley Post and Will Rogers were recovered from a wrecked airliner near Anchorage. The two aviators had been flying with friends Joe Crosson and Joel Barrows on a sightseeing trip over Mount McKinley in a Lockheed Electra. The incident ended a celebrated pair’s adventurous journey in Alaska.

National League games rained and postponed

In national league action Pittsburgh and Philadelphia games were postponed by rain. Cincinnati beat Boston 3 to 1 in eight innings while Chicago fell to Brooklyn 2 to 6 and St. Louis edged New York 1 to 0 in a close contest. In the American League Boston defeated Chicago 5 to 3, Philadelphia beat St. Louis 3 to 0, Washington topped Detroit 4 to 0, and New York routed Cleveland 7 to 0.

Old Timers Day Committees Named for 10th Event

Roswell M E Church South hosts the 10th annual Old Timers Day on September 8 with sub committees for entertainment dinner publicity dining room and public worship. Toastmaster J F Hinkle and chairman Walter Gill lead plans. A 30 year residence reunion prevails with service at eleven am and dinner in the church basement afterward.

Beauty Contest Finals Tonight and Tomorrow in Roswell

Twenty six contestants from New Mexico Texas and Oklahoma compete for Miss Queen of the Southwest on the Yucca stage tonight and tomorrow. Winners receive Hollywood exposure and a Paramount screen test with two rounds of judging by out of town panels. Local belles include Miss Grace Johnson Miss Maudetha Miller and Miss Marteal Graham. About 1800 girls entered preliminaries across the region.

WPA District Offices to Move into Bank of Commerce Building

The Works Progress Administration district offices will occupy the former Bank of Commerce building at Fourth and Main in Weshington, with 14 upstairs rooms and the ground floor finance department handling payroll and bookkeeping. District staff, including Henry Johnson and department heads, anticipate moving in next week as about 4,000 workers are planned for district projects, most from relief rolls, with wages of 40 dollars monthly and a January to February peak.

Jesus Romero Dies In Albuquerque After Two Weeks Illness

Jesus Romero a longtime Bernalillo County Republican leader died in Albuquerque after a two week illness. He was 75 born in old Albuquerque in 1860 and served as probate judge county commissioner and sheriff. Rosary tonight and body remains at his Plaza home until the funeral Monday.

Amogordo Dam Project Approved for Carlsbad Reclamation

President Roosevelt approved a 1.5 million dollar works allotment for the Alamogordo earthen storage dam on the Pecos and for lining part of the Carlsbad canal system in New Mexico. Total project cost nears 3.965 million with 1.465 million already spent and a 1 million future need.
