Amid August heat and a yellow fever surge in New Orleans the Marine Hospital reports 154 deaths since July 13, five daily on average, with cases still concealed. Efforts include a push for complete report of all fever cases by doctors and druggists and heightened inspections to uncover hidden infections. Booker T. Washington dines at United States Hotel in Saratoga, escorted by John Wanamaker. Washington the guest of Wanamaker while Mrs. Barclay Warburton accompanies Wanamaker’s daughter. A Roswell club committee, led by L. B. Tannehill, forms to launch beet sugar industry in Pecos Valley with members McGaffey Cahoon Totsek Warren Turner and Graham.
A new institute opens with forty teachers joining the staff. The opening marks a significant expansion of local educational resources and signals ongoing investment in public education.
The Chaves County Institute and County Normal began with forty teachers present and a strong outlook for a productive session. Classes form under Prof. Wilkinson Miss Edith Rodkey and C D Thompson with sessions daily from eight to twelve. Miss Patterson has wed Mr Marr in Portland and will reside in California with him, after visiting Roswell and Lincoln.
L C Card, proprietor of the Dexter Hotel, was badly hurt in an assault by robbers. Police investigation ongoing.
L. C. Card was beaten by two unknown men late Saturday night as he walked from the saloon to his hotel. He carried about three hundred dollars, which may have motivated the assault. He suffered a fractured skull and multiple arm injuries. Mrs. Card screamed, scaring off the attackers. Police are investigating a wave of countywide depredations from Hagerman to Lake Arthur, with burglaries and a dwelling robbed claim. Officers continue work.
New York August 14 reports say Erie Railroad officials took extra precautions for President Roosevelt’s safety on the Chautauqua to Jersey City trip. The presidential car avoided the main line, with the Chautauqua special split at Suffern and the train rerouted via two small branches. Roosevelt reportedly objected but complied after orders from Erie President Underwood were shown. The orders followed a Paterson police letter alleging a plot to blow up the train near Ridgewood New Jersey.
A large crowd gathered in the court house yard for Dr C E Lukens Sunday night lecture with stereopticon views on canvas. The Presbyterian pastor described the images in a suit to the Sabbath event. Part of the slides illustrated songs, notably The Ninety and Nine, and drew special interest from attendees.
A 1905 notice informs stock subscribers to pay ten dollars per share by August 15 1905 and visit Secretary L D Fort to receive stock certificates. Miss Carrie Benton of Higginsville Missouri arrives in the city for the county institute and to prepare for teaching in the public schools this fall and winter. She is an experienced teacher and comes highly recommended.
J Chambers and his daughter Miss Maude, formerly from this city and late of Artesia, passed through this morning en route to Portland Oregon where they will reside.
W F Hardwick and S G Hardwick depart for Fort Worth after ten days visiting their uncle E F Hardwick. W F Hardwick serves as landlord of the Worth Hotel.

Cattlemen from Lovelock discover a lava emitting volcano while searching for cattle in Humboldt County Nevada. The eruption was observed as molten lava streams being expelled and traced to the volcanic site by Messrs McClure Wheeler and Sommers.
Christiana Norway Aug 14 Returns from the national referendum on dissolving the union with Sweden show that of 3 211 358 votes cast only 361 oppose dissolution The meeting on August 21 was summoned to take steps toward repealing actions in agreement with Sweden.
Miss Mabel Patterson eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J F Patterson is a bride. She wed Wednesday August 9 in Portland Oregon to Mr Joe C Marr of Lincoln Nebraska. The marriage came as a surprise to Roswell friends as parents had just learned by telegram and only learned full details from a letter from Chicago after the couple began a honeymoon there.
The United States transport Logan arrived tonight with Secretary of War Taft Miss Roosevelt and their party from Manila. Local officials and a large reception committee welcomed them on board. A grand reception is planned for tomorrow. The Federal party has accepted Taft's Manila speech and will revise its platform accordingly.
A monster vinegarroon captured during the Mrs. Bentley home demolition has been placed in alcohol at the Daniel & Daniel Drug store for public viewing. The creature, once spelled in Spanish, is now increasingly written as vinegaroon in English.
All who offered to participate in the Madam Jarter entertainment are asked to meet at 7 30 Tuesday evening at the building recently vacated by the Dilley Furniture Co to have parts assigned.

Two horses were stolen from C J Franks pasture on Saturday night. The prized race horse Pickpocket and a gray gelding, unbranded, about 15 hands, with a wire cut on the left hind, were taken. Sheriff Woodruff offers 25 for return and 25 for capture and conviction of the thief.

Southbridge Mass August 14 The treasure box owned by Herman Scherny with contents intact missing since February has been returned as mysteriously as it vanished. The box held about $50 000 in cash and securities valued around $250 000 It was stolen from a Boston security vault and hidden at his home while preparing a schedule of his property. Alarms stopped the transfer of the securities.
