Budget gaps widen as New Mexico weighs tax and spending fixes
Analysts warn the state faces a growing deficit after 11 months of lower revenue, with $543.3 million less than expected. Democrats and some Republicans push for a special session, while the governor waits for full-year numbers. Possible remedies include tapping the Tobacco Settlement Fund, spending cuts, and tax increases, though the governor opposes new taxes. Hospitals, Medicaid providers, and cultural sites face cuts, with ongoing concerns about a weak economy and slow reform.
