Oil group sues over alleged illegal lease sales cancellations
The Western Energy Alliance sued the Obama administration in U S District Court accusing federal officials of illegally canceling or postponing more than two dozen oil and gas lease sales across eight states over two years to force quarterly auctions. Officials say some cancellations match limited industry interest as bids fall on about 0.5 million acres of 2.2 million offered last year. The government predicts drilling on public lands will drop about 40 percent from historical levels due to low oil and gas prices.
